The Mavericks kicked off their first season officially competing Division I against a strong division opponent in the CU Buffs. CMU scored early and often with
Amerie Chavez being the first to touch down less than five minutes into the half. CU scored next about five minutes later and the back-and-forth tempo would continue for the duration of the match.
Ryleigh Blatnik, Liz Thoma and
Zelly Moore would round out the Mavs first half scoring drive to give the team a 24-10 halftime lead.
Some major first half injuries and a strong CU second half start caught the Mavs off guard. The start of the second half was all about CU as they used their size and experience to move the ball quickly and scored 3 within the first 20 minutes of the second half. This put CU ahead 29-27 and forced CMU to respond. Strong leadership and resiliency was the name of the game. After giving up the first half lead, CMU battled back. With some aggressive tackles, some stolen plays, and some quality offloads, the team rallied late in the second. After figuring out the adjusted line up, the team began to play their game again. It started with some big tackles, some strong defense and some aggressive attacks. Scoring three trys of their own with Ellen Rickerd,
Ryleigh Blatnik, and
Courtney Hull brought it home for CMU. CMU speed and conditioning along with grit, was enough to outlast CU and bring home the season opening win.
Final score on this one 41-27. The Lady Mavs return to the CMU Rugby pitch Sunday Sept 17
th at 11am as they host Utah State University in the second division match of the season.
