LAKEWOOD, Colo. — With a pair of players shooting 1-over par Sunday, the Colorado Mesa men's golf team is in fourth place after the first round of The Writz at Mile High Invitational at Bear Creek Golf Club.
Dakota Gillman and Cole Beyer are in a five-way for fifth place after carding 73s on the 7,224-yard course in the opening tournament of the fall season.
Gillman had three birdies and four bogeys for his 73, with Beyer recording one birdie on both the front and back nine, with only three bogeys. Gillman was 1-under par at the turn, Beyer at even par after nine holes.
Playing in his first collegiate event, freshman Dylan Everett fired a 4-over 76 and is tied for 18th with two rounds to go.
Yael Chahin shot 5-over 77 and is tied for 28th and Pablo Diaz and Chris Tarmet shot 6-over 78 and are tied for 27th. The Mavericks shot a team score of 17-over 377.
Two Mavs entered as individuals, with Baptiste Laborde shooting a 77, tied with Chahin, and Timmy Cavarno struggling to a 12-over 84.
Adam Duncan of Colorado Christian leads the field after firing 4-under 68 and Owen Cornmesser of Colorado School of Mines is one stroke back. The Orediggers lead the nine-team race after a terrific opening round of 3-over 363.
The second of three rounds tees off today, with the tournament wrapping up Tuesday.
