NEW ORLEANS— Led by 2-event winner
Sierra Arceneaux, six members of the Colorado Mesa University Maverick outdoor track and field teams combined for seven all-region honors, bestowed by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.
The awards are given to the top five performers in each individual event and to members from the top three relay teams in each of the eight NCAA Division II geographical regions around the country, provided that their programs are USTFCCCA members. The Mavs, along with the rest of their Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference counterparts are in the South Central Region along with the Lone Star Conference.
Arceneaux, who now has 12 career all-region honors, was selected in both the 100 and 200 meters and is the region's top performer in the 200, marking the third time that she has received that added notoriety.
She has qualified for next week's NCAA Division II National Championships in both events and will be the No. 5 seed in the 200 after setting a school-record time of 23.33 seconds earlier this month. She is seeded 17
th (tie) in the 100 at 11.52 seconds and won both events at the RMAC Championships en-route to a second straight RMAC Women's Track Athlete of the Year honor.
The Mavs' three other women's all-region performers are
Josie Coffey (high jump),
Kiana Jackson (triple jump) and
Mica Jenrette (heptathlon) and have also been selected for the national championships along with
Kira MacGill (5,000 meters).
Dawson Heide (decathlon) and
Cameron Kalaf (javelin) were the two men's all-region honorees.
Coffey has now earned all-region honors in all six of her collegiate indoor & outdoor seasons. The junior from Lakewood, Colorado, won the RMAC title and cleared a season-best 1.75 meters (5 feet, 8 ¾ inches) and is one of the co-No. 5 seeds for the national meet.
Jackson set a mark of 12.36 meters (40-6.75) at last week's Loper Twilight last-chance meet and will be the No. 12 seed in the national championships. The redshirt senior from Fountain, Colorado has now claimed three career all-region honors.
Jenrette, who won her third consecutive RMAC heptathlon and sixth straight multi-event title this season, has now claimed nine career all-region honors. The redshirt junior from Los Lunas, New Mexico, is the No. 12 seed in the heptathlon for next week's national championships with her school-record setting qualifying score of 5,022 points.
Heide is the lone Maverick man to be selected for the national championships and will be the No. 5 seed in the decathlon after setting a qualifying and school-record score of 7,207 points. The redshirt junior from Bayfield, Colorado is now a 3-time all-region honoree.
Kalaf, a sophomore from Dillon, Colorado, won the RMAC javelin title with a school-record throw of 62.10 meters (203-9) to earn his first career all-region honor.
