GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Colorado Mesa ensured there were plenty of memorable moments to go around on Senior Day and secured a lopsided result against a team they will see again in the RMAC Tournament semifinals.
Jed Brummett recorded five goals to raise his RMAC-leading total to 54 on the season, freshman
Erich Petersen also scored five after entering the game with two goals in his career and
AJ Switzer scored four goals to reach 100 for his career to spearhead a 27-4 victory over Adams State that completes an undefeated RMAC regular season for Colorado Mesa men's lacrosse.
The 27 goals is the highest single-game total of the season for CMU, surpassing the 25 they scored in the second game of the year against Lees-McRae, while the 23-goal margin of victory matches that Lees-McRae game for the largest this season.
Drew Eickelman recorded four assists and seven ground balls for the No. 12 Mavericks, who finish the regular season at 14-2 overall and a perfect 6-0 in the RMAC. The Mavs scored nine goals in each of the first two periods and eight in the third before running out the clock for most of the fourth period. The second half of the game was played with a running clock.
The Mavericks outshot ASU 70-22 and put 40 shots on net compared to nine for the Grizzlies. CMU won 23 of 29 faceoffs, including 3 of 3 by
Kanyan Rhodes, 5 of 6 by
Dylan Checketts and 7 of 8 by
Colin Seedorf, who also recorded both his first start and first goal of the season on his senior day. The Mavericks held a 52-14 edge in ground balls and went a perfect 17-for-17 on clears while ASU went 14-for-23.
The Mavericks put three on the board early, getting goals from
AJ Switzer,
Braden Lowe and
Jed Brummett for his 50
th of the season, making Brummett just the second player in CMU history to reach 50 in a season. Brummett ended the game with 54 goals, four away from Steve Brandenburg's 2017 total of 58 for the CMU single-season record.
But an Adams State team facing an uphill battle with its two leading scorers out due to injury showed some early fight, as Daniell Joy and Dawson Balabanoff scored unassisted goals to cut the CMU lead to 3-2. Soon after, Switzer and Brummett each alternated scoring a pair of goals to make it 7-2 followed by goals from
Dylan Checketts and
James Steinke, who beat the buzzer with a second left to give CMU a 9-2 lead after a quarter.
The second quarter continued the scoring rampage, with Switzer scoring 37 seconds into the quarter for his fourth of the game. With that strike, Switzer became the fourth Maverick to reach the 100-career goal barrier, joining Brandenburg (145), Jack Griffin (135) and
Jed Brummett (114), who crossed 100 goals earlier this season. Switzer, already the program's career leader with 71 assists, now ranks third all-time in career points at 171, trailing Griffin (183) and Brandenburg (181).
Jed Brummett would add two more to get to five for the game, and as CMU's second and third lines began to play out the string,
Erich Petersen took over. Petersen scored a true hat trick in the span of 1:11, tallying with 1:20, 0:15, and 0:09 left in the first half as CMU went to the break with an 18-3 lead.
Colin Seedorf, recording his first start and playing in his second game of the year, won the opening faceoff in the third quarter, collected the ground ball and ran straight down the field to score eight seconds into the second half to make it 19-3. At this point, the coaches agreed to keep the clock running for the remainder of the game.
Erich Petersen scored his fourth with 8:53 left in the third, with older brother
Philip Petersen's assist making it 21-4.
Levi McCoy then scored before
Erich Petersen tallied his fifth of the game and seventh of his career with an assist from
Ethan Points to make it 23-4, followed by a goal from
JJ Brummett that was the third point of the game for the younger Brummett brother after two earlier assists.
Deuce Kirschke scored his third and fourth goals of the season to provide CMU's final two goals with 2:12 left in the third and 4:47 left in the fourth. Colorado Mesa passed the ball in a circle and took shot clock violations for much of the fourth quarter.
