Three Tournaments in a Row

The Lady Mavs continued their undefeated spring 7s season as they rolled into Golden and took home the Championship at Colorado School of Mines 7s Tournament. Defense stayed sharp as the ladies outscored opponents 19 trys to 3. The Mavs kicked it off with what has become a weekly matchup with Wyoming. Zelly Moore started off the day of scoring as she had a big breakthrough run on the outside to give CMU 5. Ryleigh Blatnik added to the lead as she tacked on a conversion kick, then a try and conversion of her own after receiving a nice offload. Quick ball movement and high pace play was the story of the day for the Mavs. Wyoming fell 31-0 in this one.

The Mavs stayed hot as they faced off against Colorado College for the first time this season. The name of this game was literally speed. This 14-minute match up was filled with numerous breakthroughs and long breakaway runs. Led by a slew of Mavs, CMU put up 7 trys and worked the ball around to 6 different players adding on an additional six conversions. This was a high scoring thriller, Mavs win 47-0 to round out pool play and place the Mavs top of their bracket for cross over matchups.

CMU played the University of Denver who was the #1 team in their bracket next. This was the first time this season the ladies were able to get a solid look at the competition's full roster as spring break and block period has held them back the previous two weeks. With a very nice start to the matchup, Carly Scheck took the kickoff back for +5 just seconds into the matchup. The next points didn't come for 4 more minutes as DU adjusted to the early deficit. Nelly Robles ended the defensive stand off and opened the try gates as CMU would put up 2 more trys in the remainder of the first half. Again, solid attacks and ball movement on offense and aggressive tackle and poaches on defense led the way to the Championship matchup.

This was also the first official look CMU was able to get of CSU. After a tough back and forth matchup in the semifinals with CU, Mesa had to play to their advantage for the final. CSU drew blood first as an unfortunate bounce led to a breakthrough fun by CSU to put the Mavs in the hole first. This was the first time all season the ladies did not have the lead in a matchup. It took 2 minutes for Sarah Penick to bounce back and show her speed on the outside. With a conversion kick by co-captain Ryleigh Blatnik, CMU was back on top. This didn't last long as CSU scored off of a penalty right before the half, putting them up 12-7. The Mavs used the quick halftime to regroup and calm down. With a fresh step, the ladies came out hot, scoring just under 1 minute into the half off a nice run from Carly Scheck, this turned into the go ahead run as CSU was kept out of the try zone the entire second half.  Another score by Blatnik sealed the deal and CMU marched on to victory. This was a full team effort as every member of the team saw playing time and contributed to the teams success on the pitch.

The ladies head to Boulder on Sunday to continue their strong spring performance at the CU Stampede 7s tournament. Continue to follow cmuwomensrugby on Instagram for the official schedule in the days to come.
