The opening matchup of the day proved to be a tough one for CMU. CMU started the day off with a rematch with the host team in CU Boulder. CU touched down first and fast. CMU rallied back just a minute later with a captain connection, try by
Emily Canvasser and a conversion kick by
Ryleigh Blatnik, to put CMU ahead. In this nail biter back and forth match up the mavs fell short at the end. CU returned the last-minute buzzer beater to hand the mavs their first loss of the 7s season as time expired 26-21.
Rallying back on a tough day, CMU faced CSU next. In what was a quite and calm first half with the teams tied at 7 a piece, CMU fell behind early in the first but finished the match with a vengeance. Conditioning and pace put the ladies ahead of CSU 21-14 when the clock struck zeros.
The DI filled Sunday finished with another formidable opponent in the Air Force Academy. The historically strong side touched down first to give their team the early lead, but it was pretty much all CMU after that.
Anna Toney,
Emily Canvasser,
Zelly Moore,
Ryleigh Blatnik and
Teja Smith rounded off the scores as they turned this match around 31-10 final with numerous successful conversions by Blatnik. The CU Stampede weekend rounded out the Mavs regular season 7s matches.
The Mavs head to Colorado Springs and the Air Force Academy for the DII RMR National Qualifier this Sunday April 23rd. They will face off for the first time this season against NMSU at 11:20am followed by DU at 12:20pm. A win this weekend would put the Mavs back into Nationals for the second season in a row at Lake Highlands Park in Dallas, Texas.
