Maverick men come up short in 4-3 decisions

Manzano goes 4-0 to lead CMU

GLENDALE, Ariz.— The Colorado Mesa University men's tennis team could not keep their 4-match winning streak alive as they dropped a pair of heart-breaking 4-3 decisions to Western New Mexico University and Arizona Christian University on Friday.

The Mavs, now 4-5 overall, won the doubles point and had a 3-1 overall lead against Western New Mexico at the Phoenix Tennis Center before making the journey here to the Paseo Racquet Center to face the Firestorm.

Against WNMU, the Mavericks got out to the early lead as William Leschig and Diogo Manzano delivered a 6-4 win over Lachlan Rowing and Paul Claussen in the No. 2 doubles match after Jorge Abreu and Emil Hultman had claimed an earlier 6-3 win at No. 3 doubles.

The Mavericks then won the second and third completed singles matches to build a 3-1 lead as Manzano took down Lorenzo Orellano, 6-0, 6-1 at No. 6 before Leschig won at No. 2 singles, 6-3, 6-3 over Javier Romero.

However, the Mustangs (2-1) answered back to win the final three singles matches as Rowing beat Tyler Landen, 6-3, 7-5 in the top flight to tie the overall score at 3 before Yu Jhe Du outlasted Hultman in the only 3-set match of the dual, 6-1, 4-6, 6-3 at No. 3 singles.

The Mavs also took the doubles point in the match with ACU as Hultman and Abreu, won 6-4 before Landen and Jandre Van Wyk claimed a 7-6 (7-5) victory in the top flight.

Van Wyk and Manzano, who went 4-0 throughout the day, also won in the No. 5 and 6 singles spots.  Van Wyk defeated David Maas, 6-7 (6-8), 6-2, 6-1 while Manzano got by Harry Buttifant, 6-4, 6-4.

However, the Firestorm won the other four singles matches, two of which went to three sets.  Hugo Abril delivered the clincher in the top flight by a 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 margin over Landen.

The Mavs will play one more dual in their trip to the Phoenix area facing the Spirit of Ottawa University of Arizona at 11 a.m. here at the Paseo Racquet Center.
