Mavs rally to beat Spirit, 4-3

Van Wyk, Leschig win 3-set matches to give CMU the win

GLENDALE, Ariz.— After dropping a pair of 4-3 decisions on Friday, the Colorado Mesa University men's tennis team came from behind to win by the same margin on Saturday as the Mavericks moved to 5-2 in the spring and 5-5 overall with a victory over the Ottawa University of Arizona Spirit here at the Paseo Racquet Center.

The Mavericks dropped the doubles point and played from 1-0 and 3-2 behind during the dual, but received key wins from the bottom of the singles lineup to down the Spirit (1-2).  They won the last two matches in three sets and took four of the six singles wins overall.

Freshman Diogo Manzano delivered the clincher at No. 5 singles, coming from a set down to defeat Viktor Setzer in a second set tie-breaker and in the third set to claim a 2-6, 7-6 (7-5), 6-3 victory.  He and Jorge Abreu, who was a dominant 6-0, 6-1 No. 3 singles winner, also won the Mavs' lone doubles match, 6-2 at No. 3 doubles over Setzer and Saul Bautista.

Manzano has now won all six of his singles matches this spring.

Meanwhile, the Mavericks also received singles victories from Jandre Van Wyk and freshman Henry Scheck in the fourth and sixth flights, respectively.  Van Wyk was a come from5-7, 6-3, 6-4 winner over Sean Milshteen while Scheck was a much more dominant 6-0, 6-1 victor over Bautista.

The Mavs had taken a 2-1 overall lead with Scheck and Abreu's easy wins.

However, the Spirit bounced back at the top of the lineup as Gianmarco Pitotti defeated Emil Hultman, 6-1, 7-5 at No. 2 singles.  Goor Adiv, slotted 18th in the ITA's NAIA West Region rankings, then came from a set down to win over CMU's William Leschig, who got the start at No. 1.  Adiv dropped the first set, 6-3, but blanked Leschig in the second set tiebreaker before taking a 6-4 victory in the decisive third set.

The Mavericks will take next weekend off before beginning their slate of matches against Pacific West Conference rivals at Biola on Mar. 3 in La Mirada, California.
