GOLDEN, Colo. – The Colorado Mesa men's wrestling team had 19 wrestlers compete at the Rocky Mountain Open on Sunday (Feb. 12) at Lockridge Arena hosted by Colorado School of Mines. The Mavericks had nine total wrestlers place with six of those using eligibility this year.
At 133 pounds,
Denim Torgerson placed third after earning three wins all coming by fall. He won his first two matches over Brady Hankin of Northern Colorado and Beau Beavers of Grand Canyon both by second period pins before falling to Derek Guanajuato in the semifinals.
He claimed a pin of Kole Briscoe of Air Force in the third-place match in his final bout of the day.
Jack Finnegan placed fourth at 149 pounds after going 2-2 on the day. Finnegan won his first matchup over Chadron State's Tayton Richard by major decision 9-1 and followed that up with a 6-3 win over Mines' Dylan Yancey.
He fell in his next two matches including a semifinal loss to Chadron State's Hunter Gilmore 2-1.
Tyler Doyle placed fourth at 285 pounds after going 2-2 in the day. He defeated Abraham Garcia of Adams State by fall in his first match before receiving a medical forfeit win over an opponent from Colorado State.
He then dropped two narrow decisions after that. He fell 5-2 to Northern Colorado's Tyler Perry 5-2 in the semifinal followed by a 3-2 loss to Jayson Davis of CSU Pueblo.
Oran Huff (133),
Tanner Baumgartner (165) and
Ben Robuck (174) all placed fifth at their respective weights.
Next on the schedule for the Mavericks is the NCAA Super Region VI Tournament on Saturday February 25 in Chadron, Neb. at the Chicoine Center.
