Crouch's three homers not enough for Mavs

Arrieta, Haller also homer

CANYON, Texas— Rylee Crouch hit three of Colorado Mesa University's five home runs to match a single-game school-record in a 10-9 defeat at the hands of Eastern New Mexico before the Maverick softball team's weekend at the West Texas Invitational came to a close with an 11-3 defeat in five innings to host West Texas A&M University in CMU's third and final game of the conference crossover style event between Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference and Lone Star Conference teams at the Lady Buffs' Schaeffer Park.

Myah Arrieta and Brandi Haller also homered in the game against Eastern New Mexico.

Crouch hit her blasts in the second, third and seventh innings and went 3-for-4 with five RBIs throughout the game while joining elite company with current teammate Aislyn Sharp, Brooke Doumer and program legend Kelly Adams as the only Mavs to hit three home runs in a single game.  Sharp was the last to do it in the 2021 RMAC Tournament Championship game.

Her first shot to left center tied the game at one before starting pitcher Emma Southerland answered with a solo shot of her own to put the Greyhounds (6-3) ahead, 2-1.

However, Arrieta tied the game with a homer to right in the top of the third before Crouch gave the Mavs a 4-2 lead later in the inning.

However, ENMU responded with a 5-run fourth inning to take a 7-4 lead.

Haller sliced that gap to 7-5 with her solo homer in the fifth before pair of RBI singles surrounding an Azalea Martinez homer in the bottom of the sixth extended the Greyhounds' lead to 10-5.

The Mavs would pull four runs back in the top of the seventh as Crouch hit a 2-run shot with no body out after Haller drew a lead-off walk.

A pair of infield singles followed by some heads-up base-running on an infield fly then cut the deficit to 10-8 before freshman Bella Aragon brought Sharp home on an RBI double with just one out to complete the scoring.

However, the Greyhounds' Brooke Leger got out of the mess to earn her fifth win of the season in relief of Southerland.

Four Maverick pitchers worked during the game, which saw the Mavs out-hit the Greyhounds, 13-8.
Haller, Makayla Westmoreland and Aragon all had two hits.

Against WTAMU, the Mavs scored first in the bottom of the first inning as the designated home team when Sharp doubled to begin the inning before scoring on a 2-error play.

The Lady Buffs' Gabie McConnell then equalized in the top of the second on a 2-out double that plated Julie Guzman, who had walked on the play before.

The Lady Buffs, who improved to 7-0, then exploded for nine runs in the top of the third to take a commanding 10-1 lead through 2 ½ innings.

CMU responded with one run in the bottom half of the inning before WT added a tally in the fourth.
The Mavs then scored one more time in the bottom of the fifth thanks to an RBI single by Ava Fugate but could not stave off the run-rule.

The Mavs managed seven hits throughout the game as Sharp and Westmoreland both went 2-for-3.  Sharp and Arrieta doubled.

Freshman Kennedy Vis took her second loss of the day in the circle as the starter in game two after appearing in relief against Eastern New Mexico.

CMU, done with the non-conference portion of their schedule at 2-6, will now return home to begin RMAC play next weekend against Fort Lewis on Saturday and Sunday (Feb. 18-19).
