GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – After a historically clutch goalscoring season and leading contributions to the most successful postseason run in program history, Colorado Mesa forward
Sauvelyne Randel has been rewarded with a Third Team All-American selection from the Division II Conference Commissioners Association (D2CCA).
Randel is only the second D2CCA All-American in program history, joining
Lila Dere, who was a first-team selection in 2022. Five Maverick players, including Dere, have previously earned All-American honors from the United Soccer Coaches Association, who will announce this year's picks later this month.
Randel ranked second in the conference this season with 15 goals and added six assists to tie for the conference lead with 36 points. Randel's goal and point totals were each the fourth-highest single-season total in CMU women's soccer program history.
The redshirt junior from Port-au-Prince, Haiti had a knack for scoring in the biggest moments as well. Randel ranked second in the nation and set a new single-season program record with seven game-winning goals, including in each of CMU's NCAA Tournament wins, as Randel provided all the offense in CMU's 1-0 wins over Texas Woman's and Colorado School of Mines.
Randel earns her D2CCA Third Team All-American status after previously being named First Team All-RMAC and D2CCA First Team All-South Central Region. She joins a list of CMU All-Americans that includes forward Tiffany Thompson (USC First Team, 1997), defender Cheryl Bates (USC Second Team 1997, USC First Team 2000), forward Raina Fine (USC Third Team, 2000), goalkeeper Lindsay Blose (USC First Team, 2002) and forward
Lila Dere (D2CCA First Team 2022, USC Second Team 2022).
This year served as a breakout campaign for Randel, who only scored once in her first two seasons on the Maverick roster. Randel earned a Second Team All-RMAC selection in 2022 after scoring six goals and two assists and was the team's second-leading goalscorer behind Dere, who led the nation with 23 goals scored.
Without Dere in 2023, Randel stepped up into the center forward role and had matched her 2022 total before RMAC play even started, tallying six goals in CMU's opening five matches. Randel scored two goals twice against Angelo State and Westminster and scored in four of CMU's six postseason matches, finding the net in the RMAC Tournament quarterfinals and semifinals against MSU Denver and Westminster, respectively, before hitting her pair of NCAA Tournament game winners.
Colorado Mesa set new program records for wins and games played by compiling an 18-4-1 record during the 2023 season. The Mavericks won the RMAC Tournament Championship for just the second time in program history and first time in 25 years and then won multiple games in the NCAA Tournament for the first time before being eliminated in the Round of 16 last weekend by UCCS.
The D2CCA All-America teams honor a total of 39 players via a 13-player First Team, Second Team and Third Team. Each team consists of four forwards, four midfielders, four defenders and one goalkeeper.
Randel was one of three RMAC players honored this season, with Colorado School of Mines defender Natalie Rouse earning a second-team selection and Mines forward Bella Campos accompanying Randel on the third team.
The D2CCA encourages and promotes Division II athletics and high standards of sportsmanship as important elements of high education. The D2CCA is a key communications link among the conferences as they discuss views, policies and regulations that impact NCAA Division II athletics and works closely with the NCAA as a communications channel to NCAA Division II member colleges and universities.
