GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The Colorado Mesa women's wrestling team closed out their opening weekend with the Maverick Open on Saturday (Nov. 4) in Brownson Arena. The Open featured several teams competing including four of the five Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference teams having representation in the open.
Fourth-ranked Colorado Mesa had four champions and had several wrestlers place inside the top six at their respective weight.
Jennesis Martinez and Bella Morales finished 1-2 at 101 pounds in what has become routine it seems when the two compete in the same weight class. Martinez earned the no contest win over Morales in the final but had a pair of technical fall wins leading up to the final with the first coming against Mana Chanthasone of Chadron State followed by a 13-0 tech fall win over Britley Lopez in the semis.
Morales, like her teammate, earned a pair of technical fall wins on her way to the final. The Toppenish, Wash. native picked up a 10-0 win over Taylor Lindstrom of Chadron State followed by a 10-0 win over Jennifer Thomas of Snow College in the semifinals.
Adraina Gomez had a spectacular rebound day at 109 pounds. Gomez won the championship with a 12-0 technical fall win over Nadiya Trujillo of Trinidad State in the final. But it was her first match of the day that was impressive as she avenged her loss from the previous night with a pin of Heavynne Robles-Wright at 5:39.
At 155 pounds,
Celina Cooke won the championship defeating Fort Hays State's Marissa Porsch by fall in the waning seconds of the first period. Cooke picked up a big 6-5 decision victory over Mishell Rebisch from the USA Wrestling Elite Accelerator Program.
Sophomore

A pair of freshman earned placings at 136 pounds with local product
Apple Middleton placing third and
