Mavs take care of business in Las Vegas

CMU wins 21st match of the season in a 3-0 sweep

LAS VEGAS, N.M.— The nation's 11th-ranked Colorado Mesa University Maverick volleyball team took care of business, claiming a 3-set road sweep over New Mexico Highlands University in the Cowgirls' John A. Wilson Complex on Friday evening.

Savannah Spitzer led a balanced Maverick offensive attack with 12 kills on .476 hitting Riley Daugherty added nine kills and a match-high 13 digs in the 25-13, 25-21, 25-22 victory that moved the Mavs' record to 21-3 overall.  They are also 10-2 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play and have won 15 straight matches over the Cowgirls, who fell to 3-22 (1-10 RMAC).

The Mavs finished with a 41-30 advantage in team kills as five different Mavs finished with six or more.  Aesha Alrashed and Sydney Leffler had seven a piece while Emma Shaddix added six.

Meanwhile, Jordan Woods tallied a 11 digs and six of CMU's nine service aces to match her career-high.  The Cowgirls did not have any aces.

Meanwhile, CMU Setter Sabrina VanDeList recorded 38 assists and 10 digs to tally her 12th double-double of the season while eclipsing the 1,000 assist mark for third successive season as the first RMAC setter to reach the milestone this year.  She has now recorded four consecutive double-doubles and has 1,004 assists this season.

The Mavs held the Cowgirls to a .140 team attack percentage although Seraiah Morgan had 11 kills on .280 hitting after coming off the bench.

CMU hit .184 as a team throughout the match, but were clicking in the opening set, hitting .370 before struggling a bit in the second and third sets, which saw them hit .140 and .114, respectively.

Woods had two of her aces in a 11-1 run early in the match, which put CMU up 13-3.  The Cowgirls could never recover as Daugherty recorded four kills in the opening set alone.

The other two sets were more intense battles.  The Mavs trailed 16-14 in the second but tied the set at 17 on Daugherty and Spitzer kills.  The set was also tied at 18, 19, 20 and 21 before a 4-0 run, finished off by a VanDeList ace gave the Mavs a 2-0 overall lead.

The Mavs then built a 7-1 lead in the third set and later led 19-13 before the Cowgirls rallied back to tie the score at 20 and again at 21.

However, a Cowgirl setting error and back-to-back kills by Leffler put the Mavs on the precipice of victory, something they claimed two points later on an Emma Shaddix kill.

The Mavs have played their last four matches over three weekends on the road but will return home to close out the regular season next weekend against Black Hills State on Friday (Nov. 10) at 7 p.m. and South Dakota Mines on Saturday, Nov. 11 at 2 p.m.

The RMAC Tournament will then begin on Tuesday, Nov. 14.
