th-ranked Colorado Mesa University Maverick volleyball team enjoyed their first home match in 24 days, sweeping visiting Black Hills State University on Parent's Night in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action on Friday night in a boisterous Brownson Arena.
The Mavs improved to 11-1 at home and 22-3 overall with the 25-19, 25-12, 25-16 victory and moved to 11-2 in RMAC play heading into their final regular season match of the season on Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock against South Dakota Mines. The Hardrockers improved to 17-8 overall and are just a match behind the Mavs in the RMAC standings at 10-3 with a 4-set win at Westminster in Salt Lake City on Friday.
BHSU fell to 5-20 overall and to 0-13 in conference play with Friday's defeat.
Leffler finished Friday's victory with 14 kills and hit .440 while Spitzer put down 13 kills on .391 hitting. She also added a match-leading three blocks and an ace. Outside hitter
Riley Daugherty was also in double-figures for the Mavs, recording ten kills.
CMU hit .322 as a team, recording 50 kills, nearly twice as many as BHSU's 27 while holding the visitors to a .076 team attack percentage.
The Mavs also had a 55-47 advantage in total digs as libero
Allison Waller recorded 18. She also added a career-high equaling eight assists and a pair of service aces while
Jordan Woods finished with eight digs.
The Mavericks played clean volleyball, hitting above .300 in all three sets and were blocked just two times. The Mavs also did not allow a single service ace for the second consecutive match.
After a tight start, the Mavs came from behind to take a 16-14 lead before two Yellow Jacket points evened the first set.
However, the Mavs went on a 4-1 run featuring two Spitzer kills and another from VanDeList to go up 20-17 and force a Yellow Jacket timeout.
The visitors did score the next point before Leffler put down three kills in the final six rallies to close out the set.
The Mavs then raced to a 7-2 lead in the second set and extended it to 13-4 while never looking back for the rest of the night.
CMU hit .316 in the second set as the Yellow Jackets had just six kills while committing seven errors to finish the frame with a negative .030 hitting percentage.
The third set was nearly as dominant as the jumped out to a 12-3 lead thanks in large part to a 9-0 run with Waller at the service line. The Mavs also had another 5-0 run triggered by two Leffler kills and capped by a Spitzer ace to go ahead 19-9 before cruising to the win while getting some bench players in to the match.
Daugherty really shined in the final set, recording seven kills in the final frame alone after Leffler and Spitzer combined for 21 kills in the opening two sets.
