Leffler-led Mavs close out Grizzlies in four

Junior outside hitter records 24 kills in history-making win

ALAMOSA, Colo.— Sydney Leffler recorded a career-high 24 kills, including on each of the last four and seven of the last nine rallies as the Colorado Mesa University Mavericks improved to 16-1 for the first time in program history with a 4-set (25-17, 21-25, 25-16, 25-23) road win over Adams State University on Saturday afternoon in the Grizzlies' Plachy Hall.

The nation's tenth-ranked Mavericks, looked like they were destined to head to a fifth set before rallying from 22-17 down thanks to Leffler's heroics as the junior outside hitter rattled off three consecutive kills to cut the deficit to 22-20 forcing a Grizzly timeout.

The teams then exchanged points which made the score 23-21 before Leffler continued her tear with four more kills, including one that withstood a Grizzly video review challenge to close out the victory, CMU's eighth straight in the rivalry.  The win also moved CMU to 6-1 in RMAC play while the Grizzlies fell to 4-12 overall and to 2-4 in RMAC play.

Leffler, who leads the RMAC in kills with 264, put down ten in the fourth set alone as the Mavericks hit .312 as a team after hitting .359 in the third set.  They were also locked in a close battle in that third frame and led by just a single point at 12-11 before going on an 8-2 run to open up a 20-13 gap en-route to the 9-point win.

CMU hit .243 in the first set win but was guilty of 15 hitting errors in the opening two frames before playing much cleaner volleyball in the second half of the match, committing just five in the third and fourth in the decisive fourth set.

Leffler was just one of many Mavericks who put up big statistical figures in the win.  Fellow outside hitter Riley Daugherty recorded 12 kills and 11 digs for her first double-double as a Maverick while Emma Shaddix also added 11 kills from the right side.  Savannah Spitzer, who like Leffler had 17 kills in a Friday night win at CSU Pueblo, put down another ten and hit .429 in Saturday's win.

Meanwhile, libero Allison Waller tallied a career-high 27 digs while defensive specialist Hahni Johnson recorded 12 digs and four more service aces, after recording a career-high five on Friday night.

The Mavs also finished with six blocks, including five solos, as Aesha Alrashed had three while Leffler chipped in two more.

CMU finished with a big 64-46 advantage in total kills while Sabrina VanDeList recorded 47 assists and nine digs, falling just one shy of her third successive double-double.  The Mavs also had a 74-54 edge in digs and held the Grizzlies to .186 hitting while hitting .244 themselves.

Cindy Garcia led the Grizzlies with 12 kills while Angela Youngs tallied nine along with four blocks.

The Mavs have now won five straight matches overall and will return home for their next three, starting Friday (Oct. 13) against UCCS.  They will then take on national poll No. 12 Regis on Saturday (Oct. 14) before closing out the home-stand against Chadron State on Tuesday, Oct. 17.
