FLAGSTAFF, AZ. – The Colorado Mesa hockey team played games seven and eight of the season this weekend, in a two game series against the Northern Arizona Ice jacks.
The Mavericks got off to a slow start in both games. Game one found them down 1-0 in the first period after out shooting the Ice jacks 15-7.
After a rough start to the second period the Mavericks would fall down 4-0 before seeing Senior
Collin Fitzgerald net the first CMU goal of the game. The Mavericks would find the back of the net two more times in the second from Junior
Evan Wagner and Sophomore
Logan Koch.
The beginning of the second would be the last time the Ice jacks found the back of the net. The Mavericks went on a five goal run that would seal them their first win of the season. The third period saw
Logan Koch deliver his second goal of the night, which would tie the game.
Kevin Miller would give the Mavericks the lead and
Eli Wilson would score the game sealing goal, leading to a 6-4 victory.
Game two again saw another slow Maverick start, the Ice jacks would score the first four goals of the game, and wouldn't look back. Two Maverick goals would bring the score to 2-4.
The third period would start with an NAU goal and that would end the goal scoring for both teams. The rest of the game would be littered by penalties. After it was all said and done, the Mavericks would lose 5-2, bringing the weekend series to a 1-1 split.
The Mavericks will play three home games next week, with their 7th annual Pink The Rink being played on Saturday.
