WEEKLY REWIND
Colorado Mesa celebrated their annual homecoming game with a 42-7 win over Adams State last Saturday in front of a season-high 4,238 fans at Stocker Stadium. The win pushed the Mavericks win streak to two games with three games to play on the schedule.
The Mavericks were outstanding on defense as they allowed just 276 yards of offense and had six sacks in the game. The Grizzlies only had 3.5 yards per play and had the ball for a majority of the game as they held the time of possession battle with 36:26-23:34 advantage.
Levi Krebs led the defense with 10 tackles while both Liban Shongolo and Lex Leany each had nine tackles. Six different players got in on sacks in the win with La'Markus Reed leading that charge with a sack and a half on the day.
The offense continued to get the running game going and the two headed monster of Marvin Jones and Myles Newble continue to improve each week. They led the team to a season-high 307 yards on the ground including nine yards per carry. The Mavericks scored four touchdowns on the ground while Jones ripped off his first 100-yard rushing game of his career.
The lone black eye from the win is that the Mavericks committed four turnovers in the game and despite that still were able to win by a 35 point margin.
THE MATCHUP
The Mavericks and ThunderWolves will meet up for the 24th time in the two program's history on Saturday at The ThunderBowl in the Steel City of Pueblo, Colo. The Mavericks last win in the series came in 2016 but not without some controversy. Colorado Mesa came away from that game with a 20-19 win at Stocker Stadium. On the final play of the game, CSU Pueblo made it down to the goal line and went for it with little time on the clock and no timeouts. The Mavericks stuffed the ThunderWolves at the goal line according to the officials. Later, video and photos released appeared to show CSU Pueblo reaching the endzone on the play.
