Mavericks remain undefeated after win over Colorado State

Coming off of an unscheduled long hiatus, the Mavs faced a tough opponent in Colorado State University, Sun. at 2pm. After receiving the first half kickoff, a solid tackle from the opposition put CMU on the defense to start the matchup. After several hard-fought minutes, the Mavs regained possession and Carly Scheck was off to the races for the first try of the half. After a Courtney Hull conversion, CMU was on the board 7-0, seven minutes in. Another quick two try's one each from Hull and Scheck, and at the 14-minute marker, Mavs were up 17-0. The scoreboard did not match the level of effort it was taking CMU to put points in. As a relentless and hard nose defense continued to keep CMU on their heels.

Roughly 20 minutes into the matchup CSU saw their first points of the day. CMU continued to move the ball and attack weaknesses. Nallely Robles broke tackles and touched down on the outside after a hard run. Ryleigh Blatnik joined the scoring as she hit an impressive offload and dodged several tacklers to grow the CMU lead going into half. Halftime score had the Mavs up with a strong performance and lead of 29-12.

CSU was the first to score with speed on the outside coming out of the half. The Mavs quickly saw their lead dwindling as 20 minutes in CSU scored 12 unanswered points. The long 3 weeks off showed as the Mavs were a little less polished on the finishing side of things. The Mavs moved the ball within 5m of the try line four times in the second half, but a strong CSU defense along with unfortunate mental and physical breakdowns left CMU empty handed on each attempt. With the match hinging at 29-24, what looked to be a halftime blowout, became a nail biter. Zelly Moore put the nail in the coffin with 5 minutes left in the matchup as beautiful team plan and ball movement turned into a CMU try.

CMU walks away with this one - final score 36-24. Ladies have a quick turnaround as they head to Logan, Utah and the home of Utah State in a neutral site matchup with Montana State University Sat. Oct. 28th at 11am to round out the regular season. Follow cmuwomensrugby for the up-to-date feedback on the team's success!
