Mavs wrap up doubleheader weekend at Utah

Sampson win, four second place-finishes lead CMU's efforts against the Pac-12's Utes

SALT LAKE CITY— Colorado Mesa University redshirt sophomore Ben Sampson claimed his third victory in two days while the Maverick men's and women's swimming combined to claim four other runner-up and 14 third-place finishes in a Saturday dual at NCAA Division I Utah and the Ute Natatorium.

Sampson, who won both the 100-yard backstroke and 400-yard individual medley on Friday against the Utes, claimed the 200 back on Saturday, touching the wall in 1:48.22.  He was also second in the 200 IM at 1:51.64 and in the 400 free relay at the end of the day as the Maverick men fell 128-57 in the team scoring battle, contested over ten events.

Utah's women won the dual, 143-42.

In the women's contest, Lily Borgenheimer took second in the 200 IM with a time of 2:08.03 while the 400 free relay quartet of Ada Qunell, Olivia Hansson, Ruby Bottai and Logan Anderson did the same with a time of 3:35.96.

The Mavs "B" teams also both took third in the 400 free relay while their "A" squads did the same in the 200 medley relay at the start of the dual.

After not competing in Friday's dual, the Maverick divers got a chance to take to both the 1 and 3-meter boards on Saturday.  Isaiah Cheeks finished third in both events, scoring 287.70 points on the 3-meter before tallying 269.85 over six dives off the 1-meter.

Kyra Apodaca also finished third on the 3-meter with 248.75 points and was fourth on the 3-meter with 234.45.

Elsewhere, Kyle Benjamin finished third in the men's 500 free with a time of 4:45.50 while John Walgast took third in the 100 fly with a time of 51.81 seconds.

Mahmoud Elgayar also claimed a pair of third place finishes in the 200 breast (2:09.58) and 200 IM (1:56.97).

Katerina Matoskova, Maddi Moran and Qunell were also third place finisher for the women.  Matoskova completed the 200 back in 2:07.10 while Moran completed the 200 breast in 2:24.59.  Qunell finished the 200 IM in 2:11.15.
