CMU leads all state-wide institutions in total selections

DENVER— Four current or past Colorado Mesa University student-athletes from as many sports were selected for Sportswomen of Colorado awards as the organization announced their list of 2022 honorees.

The Mavericks had more selections than any other institution or organization.

CMU swimmer Lily Borgenheimer and wrestler Marissa Gallegos were both selected for the second straight year and will be joined by a pair of first-time honorees in Maverick triathlon standout Shannon Feran and softball alumnae Paige Adair.

Biographical summaries on each of the selected Mavericks can be found below.

"The women, coaches and organizations are being recognized for their outstanding achievements during 2022," the organization said in their overall announcement release. "The honor is a true testament to their incredible talent and dedication."

Sportswomen of Colorado also runs a scholarship program, funding sports camp experiences for deserving girls aged 9-13.

The 49th annual awards celebration will be held on Sunday, March 12 at the Hyatt Regency Denver.

Some of the other notable recipients include WNBA Coach of the Year Becky Hammon, MVP of the National Women's Soccer League Sophia Smith and volleyball coach Tom Hilbert, who recently retired with more than 800 career victories at Colorado State University.

Paige Adair

The 2022 CMU graduate was named as the RMAC Pitcher for the second straight year in 2022 and also became the first player in program history to receive D2CCA South Central Region Pitcher of the Year honors.

A 2-time all-region pick, Adair set the school record for ERA (1.30) during her senior season, leading the Mavs to a sixth consecutive RMAC Regular Season title with a 35-3 conference record.

The Aztec, New Mexico native also went 17-3 and recorded a pair of no-hitters during final campaign, holding opponents to a RMAC low .143 batting average, 67 points lower than any other RMAC Pitcher.

Adair is now an assistant coach at conference rival Fort Lewis College in Durango.

Lily Borgenheimer

The fifth-year senior swimmer from Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin, became the first Maverick swimmer to ever win a national title, claiming the NCAA Division II Championship in the 200-yard breaststroke last March.  That effort was good for one of her five first team and six overall CSCAA All-America honors in 2022.

A 15-time all-American throughout her career, Borgenheimer led the Mavericks to a fifth-place finish at the 2022 NCAA Division II Championship, the program's first ever top-10 finish after leading the Mavs to a fourth straight Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference title with a championship record score of 1,323 ½ points.

She won all seven her events at the RMAC Championships and is now a 13-time RMAC Champion.  She was also named as the RMAC Championship Swimmer of the Meet and as the RMAC Co-Swimmer of the Year for the 2021-22 season.

Borgenheimer holds the CMU record in seven events, the El Pomar Natatorium Record in six and the RMAC Championship record in three.

She has continued her impressive efforts in the 2022-23 season and currently leads the NCAA Division II performance lists in three individual events and has been named as the RMAC Swimmer of the Week three times.

As a team, the Mavericks are ranked first in the country for the first time in program history.

Borgenheimer also shines academically and was named as the RMAC Swimming & Diving Academic Athlete of the Year for the 2021-22 season and as a CoSIDA Second Team Academic All-American.

Shannon Feran

The Broomfield native won the USA Triathlon Age Group National Championship in August, besting a field of more than 900 women to win the overall title.

During the collegiate season, Feran earned College Triathlon Coaches Association First Team All-America honors after finishing third to lead the Mavericks to a second-place team finish at the Women's Collegiate Triathlon National Championships.

A former Mavericks swimmer and track runner who has shined in triathlon, Feran also earned CTCA All-Region honors after finishing second at the West Regional Qualifier and helped lead the Mavs to their fourth consecutive team title.

She is also 2-time CTCA Scholar All-American.

Marissa Gallegos

The redshirt junior from Denver, is the only 3-time all-American in the Mavericks' brief but very successful women's wrestling history.  She finished third in the 123-pound bracket at the 2022 WCWC National Championships as part of an overall 25-2 season.

She was also the WCWC Southwest Regional Champion in 2022 and was named as the NWCA Co-National Wrestler of the Month.

Currently ranked No. 1 in the NCAA, she has an unblemished 16-0 record this season and is CMU's wins record holder with an 82-8 career record.

She has also shined at the national and international level and is currently an alternate for the USA Wrestling Senior National Team after finishing third at the Senior World Team Trials in 2021.

In December, she was the runner-up at the Bill Farrell Memorial International Tournament.

Gallegos is also a 3-time NCWA Scholar All-American.
