GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – In just under an hour and a half Colorado Mesa volleyball opened the weekend in sweeping fashion, grounding the visiting Skyhawks of Fort Lewis. The Mavericks picked up their tenth win of the season, 25-15, 25-19, 25-10, Friday night in Brownson Arena bringing them to 5-2 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action.
The offensive presence of
Sierra Hunt and
Savannah Spitzer led the way for the Mavs with 12 and 10 kills respectively.
Tye Wedhorn finished with nine kills, hitting an impressive .692 on an errorless night. Fellow middle, Spitzer also finished over .600 on the night. Behind the service line Sabrina VanDelist notched a season high four aces, while adding 43 assists to the ever present Maverick attack.
Defensively,
Kerstin Layman tallied 19 digs in three sets, Wedhorn and
Erin Curl chipping in two blocks up at the net.
The Mavs led in nearly every category, with the blocks even at four apiece. 50 kills were collected between six CMU players, while the Skyhawks combined for 20 on .080 hitting. CMU committed just 10 errors to finish the night hitting .435.
Set one was a back-and-forth affair up until double digits. Fort Lewis took a 2-point lead on a service ace, only to be overshadowed by a 4-0 run from the Mavs to overtake the lead 10-8. A 5-0 run later in the set forced the Skyhawks to call a timeout, but the streak continued following the break. A late effort to close the gap fell short for FLC as
Tye Wedhorn snuck one through the block for the final point of set one.
The runs continued into the second set with the Mavs jumping out to a 4-0 lead. Fort Lewis took an 8-7 lead, but that would be the only one of the set. A kill by
Sydney Leffler put the Mavs ahead by six, the lead holding strong throughout the remainder of set two.
Set three started going the way of the Skyhawks with back-to-back service aces, but not too long after the Mavs made a push to regain the advantage. Another 6-0 run was halted by a challenge from the Mavericks, resulting in a replay that went the way of the Skyhawks.
Regardless, the Mavs built up enough of a lead closing out the set and the match on a 5-0 and 4-0 run for the sweep and the win.
JJ Curry put down five kills to lead the Skyhawks offense, Joviana Romero and Lauren Shea close behind with four kills each.
Cross town rivals the Western Colorado Mountaineers make there way to Brownson Arena tomorrow afternoon to rumble with the Mavs in a 3 p.m. matinee.
