Freshmen lead Mavs to Saturday split, first dual win of 2022-23

PUEBLO, Colo.— Freshmen Kristen Thomas, Delia Maier and Jane Steur went a combined 8-0 throughout the day as they led the Colorado Mesa University women's tennis team to a Saturday split and to its first dual win of the young season on Saturday here at the Pueblo Duals.

Thomas went 4-0, winning both of her No. 5 singles matches in straight sets while teaming with Maier for a pair of No. 3 doubles victories in matchups against Lubbock Christian and Fort Hays State here at the City Park Tennis Complex.  Steur was also victorious in both of her No. 6 singles matches.

The Mavericks won the doubles point in both matches but dropped the No. 1 through 4 singles matches to fall to Lubbock Christian, 4-3 in the morning.  Two of those matches were decided in match tiebreakers.

CMU went 1-2 on the weekend.

However, the Mavericks swept the doubles affairs against Fort Hays State and won five of the singles matches as they defeated the Tigers, 6-1 to claim their eight consecutive win over their former Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference rivals since 2014.

Against LCU, the Mavs took the early 1-0 team lead as Thomas and Maier claimed a 6-2 win over Oshini Herath and Taylor Nichols to give the Mavs the doubles point.  Halle Romero and Paige Furin were also 6-2 winners in the No. 2 flight.

However, the Lady Chaps (2-2), came back to win the first three singles matches before Thomas stopped the bleeding with a 6-4, 6-2 triumph over Herath.   The teams then split third-set tiebreakers in the No. 4 and No. 6 singles matches.  Steur was a 5-7, 6-2, 1-0 (10-7) victory over Rhoades in the final completed match after Emily-Bo Meyer held on for a 6-2, 3-6, 1-0 (10-8) win over Furin to clinch the dual.

The Mavs dominated the doubles matches as Romero and Furin, won 6-1 at No. 2 before Makenna Livingston and Macy Richards blanked Irina Alfonso and Maria Paz Diaz in the top flight.  Thomas and Maier, who later won an exhibition singles set, were 7-5 victors as well.

The Mavs then continued to dominate and won the next five completed singles matches with Livingston, Richards, Furin, Thomas and Steur all claiming wins.

Livingston's victory over Alfonso at No. 1 singles was in come-from-behind fashion.  She had dropped the opening set to Alfonso, 6-1, but won the second, 6-0 before edging the Tiger sophomore, 10-8 in the tiebreaker.

Richards won 6-1, 7-5 over Stefany Stemmer at No. 3 singles while Furin won both sets, 6-2 to take the No. 4 singles victory over Fiorella Mendez.

Thomas was nearly as impressive, winning 6-2, 6-3 over Heidi Lubbers while Steur needed a tiebreaker to dispatch Grace Unruh, 1-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-6).

FHSU (1-2), picked up its only win at No. 3 singles from Diaz.
