Box Score GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Makena Livingston hung tough against highly-seeded players in the main draws of both the singles and doubles at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) West Regionals from Grand Junction, ultimately falling just short as the Mavericks were eliminated from the competition.
Livingston, the No. 15 seed in the singles draw, faced off against No. 4 Elodie Busson of Hawaii Pacific in a round of 16 matchup. The Mavs sophomore from Huntington Beach, Calif. won the first set before Busson rallied to take the second set and the tiebreaker, winning the match 4-6, 6-2, 10-6.
In the consolation portion of the singles bracket, sophomore Kenna Kelley lost 8-1 to Biola's Gaby Carvajal.
Due to rain and lightning in the area, doubles play moved inside to the Junction Indoor Tennis Center. Livingston and doubles partner Issy Coman had reached the quarterfinals after Thursday's action but were faced with a daunting matchup against the No. 1-seeded duo of Madison Kane and Elionora Liga from Azusa Pacific University.
The Mavs duo flashed some excellent play and kept the match close, but Kane and Liga won the match 8-5 to advance to the semifinals.
Because of the rain delays and the maximum of four courts available indoors, some of the consolation bracket for the doubles draw was not completed. The Maverick duo of Paige Furin and Kristen Thomas did not play their scheduled match.
The three-day ITA Regionals conclude on Saturday with the semifinals and finals of the men's and women's singles draws and the finals of the men's and women's doubles.
