PUEBLO, Colo.— The Colorado Mesa University men's tennis team dropped a 4-3 heartbreaker to Lubbock Christian University on Saturday morning during Pueblo Duals action here at the City Park Tennis Complex.
The Chaps (2-1) swept the doubles matches and the top three flights in singles to record the win over the Mavericks (0-3). Both the No. 1 and 2 singles matches were decided in a match tiebreaker as the Mavs fell just short of their first victory of the young season in what was their third match in just over 24 hours.
Jorge Abreu,
Henry Scheck and Jandre van Wyk all won in straight sets in the bottom half of the singles lineup for the Mavs.
Abreu defeated Herman Aguirre, 7-6 (9-7), 6-0 in the No. 4 match while Scheck claimed a convincing 6-3, 6-2 win over Carlos Gutierrez at No. 5.
Van Wyk then pulled the Mavs into a 3-3 tie with a 6-3, 6-4 No. 6 singles win over Sabri Laphitz before Braden Tipton clinched the dual for the Chaps with a No. 3 singles win, winning the second set in a tiebreaker.
Tyler Landen had won the second set of his No. 1 singles match with Martins Abamu but was defeated 10-5 in the match tiebreaker.
Later, LCU's Kelly Giese came from a set down to defeat
William Leschig by a 10-7 margin in the No. 2 singles match tiebreaker. That victory was key and put the Chaps ahead 3-1 before Abreu and Scheck finished their matches to level the score.
The Mavs have now completed the dual portion of their fall season but will look forward to hosting the ITA West Regional Championships, beginning Thursday, Sept. 29.
