Box Score LACEY, Wash. –
Lila Dere opened the season with yet another goal, but the Saint Martin's Saints came roaring back to hand CMU a 3-1 road loss to open up the 2022 season.
Fresh off scoring 15 goals during the 2021 campaign, Dere picked up right where she left off by scoring just over eight minutes into the match with assists from
Mikayla Eccher and freshman forward
Kylie Wells, a Fruita Monument High School product playing in her first college match.
After that opening strike, the difference of the game was that the Mavs were unable to put away any more chances while the Saints did. Plenty of stats overwhelmingly favored the Mavericks, as CMU outshot the home team 28-8, put 13 shots on target to SMU's four and took 13 corner kicks to the Saints' two.
Maria Pagnotta equalized in the 23
rd minute for Saint Martin's, allowing the Saints to go into the halftime break tied at 1-1 despite being outshot 16-3 in the first half.
Even though the Mavs continued to pepper the Saint Martin's goal with shot after shot, Saints goalie Soph Mendoza made 12 saves to keep the Mavericks at bay.
Meanwhile, Saint Martin's took the lead in the 71
st minute on a goal from Ellison Kephart, assisted on by Alyssa Carapia, before Brianna Yamada added an insurance goal in the 83
rd minute with assists from Mia Fleming and Taylor Goodpaster.
Mavericks goalie
Chloe Dody made one save, denying Ravyn Mummey in the 61
st minute.
Although she only found the net once, Dere was a persistent goalscoring threat, taking nine shots and putting four on target.
Mira Houck (three shots on goal),
Sophia Beames (two) and Wells (two) were among the Maverick players to be denied by Mendoza.
The Mavericks will face another GNAC opponent on Sunday afternoon, taking on Western Oregon at 1 p.m. The Wolves defeated No. 20 Sonoma State 1-0 on the road in their opening match of the season.
