KANSAS CITY, Mo.— The Colorado Mesa University Mavericks won their fifth straight men's lacrosse game and improved to 10-3 with a 10-5 road win over former conference rival Rockhurst University on Saturday here at the Hawks' Bourke Field.
The Mavs won all 17 face-offs in the game as
Trent Pernell and
Jed Brummett both recorded hat-tricks off the bench in the win.
James Steinke also had a 3-point game with a goal and two assists while
Dylan Checketts led the face-off domination, going 15-for-15 on his draws while scooping up a game-high eight ground balls.
Defensively,
Trey Corkin III had three caused turnovers while
Drew Eickelman and
Tanner Stopkoski had two each for the Mavs, who held Rockhurst to just 26 total shots, including 11 on goal.
Nolan Hoffman made six saves in for the Mavs, who had a 26-9 advantage in ground balls and a 44-26 edge in total shots.
The Mavs were a strong 3-for-5 on extra-man opportunities as Steinke, Brummett and Pernell all scored man-up goals.
After falling behind early in Thursday' 8-4 win at Quincy, the Mavericks got to out a great start taking a 4-0 lead in the first 9:08 of action. Steinke opened the scoring with his man-up goal just 1:08 into the game after Luke Goetz took the first of two first-quarter interference penalties for the Hawks.
After assisting on Steinke's opener,
Carson Schwark then scored just 2:49 later before
Hayden Scherr made it 3-0 with 8:59 still left in the opening quarter.
AJ Switzer then scored with 5:52 left.
The Hawks would open the second-quarter scoring two Jack Vande Ven goals, which cut the Mavs' lead in half before Brummett scored on a Steinke assist to put the Mavs ahead by three.
Leading 5-3 at the half, Brummett then scored a man=up goal to begin the third quarter scoring before the Hawks pulled within a single goal (6-5) with tallies by Alec Heflin and Vande Ven, who had a hat-trick for the hosts.
However, Pernell then heated up scoring each of the game's next three goals before assisting on the final one as the Mavericks pulled away for the eventual win.
Saturday's game was the final non-conference game of the year for the Mavs, who will resume Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play on Friday afternoon at CSU Pueblo.
