Tavares, Fla. – Colorado Mesa beach volleyball continued their run for the AVCA Small College Beach National title Friday at Hickory Point Beach. Splitting their contests, they narrowly dropped their final pool dual to Palm Beach Atlantic, setting up a challenge match with a familiar opponent in Texas A&M Kingsville later in the day.
Jessa Megenhardt and
Jada Hall secured a team point at the No. 3 flight with a straight set win over Julia Golichowski and Karla Cantero.
Tye Wedhorn and
Sabrina VanDeList also had the advantage at the fives flight with identical 21-14 scores for the team's second point.
Palm Beach would claim the other points to take the dual.
Finishing second in pool the crossover matched them up with the Javelinas of Texas A&M Kingsville.
Having yet to beat the Javelinas the Mavericks came out with vengeance not only beating them but taking the dual in sweeping fashion. The fours pair of Ara
Norwood and
Sierra Hunt earned the first point, followed shortly behind the ones of
Hahni Johnson and
Savannah Spitzer. The official point to secure the dual came from
Holly Schmidt and
Macie Lachemann at the twos.
Forcing deciding sets at the threes and fives, the Mavs put the icing on the cake at the threes, the cherry on top coming from the fives.
The win not only sent the team to the final four, but also marked the first time the Mavs defeated the Javelinas in program history.
They move on to play Tampa, today (April 16) at 10 a.m. in the semifinal round.
