QUINCY, Ill.— Carson Schwark recorded his 11
th career hat-trick and his second of the season and moved up on Colorado Mesa University's goal and point-scoring charts as the nation's 18
th-ranked Mavericks grinded out a defensive an 8-4 over the Quincy University Hawks here at the QU Stadium on Thursday evening.
The Mavericks improved to 9-3 with what was their fourth straight win while the Hawks fell to 4-8 despite an impressive 28-save effort from goalkeeper Ryan Riggs.
The Mavs trailed 4-1, 20 minutes into the contest but scored the final seven unanswered goals in the win, figuring out Riggs while holding the hosts without a goal for the final 40 minutes.
Schwark tied the game at four with 12:21 to go in the third quarter with his second goal after ending the first half scoring with his first marker, which came with just 52 seconds left in the half.
Jed Brummett and
Trent Pernell then scored later in the third quarter as the Mavs went up 6-4 before a man-up goal by
AJ Switzer with 9:03 followed by Schwark's third goal with 7:28 left allowed CMU salt the victory away.
James Steinke and
Logan Smith had also scored earlier in the first half. Steinke added two assists while
Hunter Holcomb had provided the help on the Mavs' first two goals.
Schwark, who now has 68 career goals, sixth most in CMU history, finished the game with 14 shots as the Mavs took 53 against Riggs and the Hawk defense. His shot total was the most by an Mav this season and tied for fifth most in CMU's single-game history. The fifth-year senior also moved into a tie for seventh on CMU's career point-scoring chart with 91 and is now just nine away from becoming just the sixth Maverick to ever reach the century mark.
The Maverick defense was solid and held the Hawks to just 21 total shots as
Nolan Hoffman made saves on six of then ten that were on frame to pick up the complete game victory. He is now 2-0.
The Hawks were also guilty of 30 turnovers, which negated their 8-7 face-off advantage against Mavs, who led the country in face-off winning percentage coming into the evening.
Duncan Cross caused three turnovers and scooped up two ground balls to lead the long-stickers.
Third-stringer
Mike Edwards won half of his eight draws for CMU.
Both teams finished with 18 ground balls.
The Hawks had scored the first two goals before Smith put the Mavs on the board with just three seconds in the opening quarter.
Jordan Ernst, who had two goals for the Hawks, then made the score 3-1 just seconds into the second quarter by Preston Willman put the hosts up 3-1 with 10:02 to go in the half.
However, Steinke then started the Maverick comeback just four minutes later before Hoffman made four of his six saves in the second half to keep the Mavs in front.
The Mavericks were guilty of just 12 turnovers and were able to clear on 28 of 29 attempts throughout the evening.
Both teams converted one penalty as ten total flags were thrown.
The Mavs will now head to Kansas City, Missouri for their final non-conference game of the season on Saturday. They will face 6-4 Rockhurst University on Saturday at Noon (CDT) (11 a.m. Mountain).
