GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The Colorado Mesa women's lacrosse team heads on the road once again, this time staying in state and back into Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action. They kick off the week with a bout at No. 7 Regis on Friday (April 1), continuing down the I-25 to meet up with UCCS on Sunday (April 3) for the first series of a three-game road stretch.
A Look Back
Over the break the Mavericks (4-3) spent some time in the sunshine and under lights playing against a trio of Florida schools. They dropped their first two matches of the trip to No. 6 Florida Southern and No. 9 Rollins College, but closed out the trip on a high note with a 13-12 overtime win over (RV) Saint Leo, the game winner off the stick of
Taylor Jakeman.
Their stretch of games against ranked opponents continued into their return Sunday, where they returned to defend their home turf against No. 4 Lindenwood.
The Lions were quick to score, building up to an 8-2 lead after the first period. They added on in the second, with the Mavs netting four total in the first half.
The Lions offense tapered off in the second half, CMU netting two goals in the fourth while quieting the Lindenwood attack and leaving them scoreless.
The games between March 21-27,
Regan Wentz tallied seven goals to lead the team's offensive output, going an perfect 3-3 on free position goals.
Kelsey Viger orchestrated the back half of the field with eight ground balls and five caused turnovers.
Don't Deny Davis
Continuing to make her attacking presence known, redshirt sophomore midfielder
Kiley Davis has 18 goals to date, scoring in the last five outings.
In the 16-5 triumph over McKendree, she was behind five of the team's goals – a season best for the Hampstead, New Hampshire native. She is also tied for the most assists on the team with five for 23 points. Her offence extends into one of four players in on double-digit draw controls.
Dual Threat
Second on the team in goals, and tied for first with nine caused turnovers is redshirt sophomore attack
Regan Wentz. On a three-game scoring streak, she is credited with a third of the team's goals against Lindenwood, and net a season best four goals against Fort Lewis.
Her 12 ground balls are third most on the team, and leads the team in free position goals with seven.
Scouting the Rangers
Yet to be defeated, the Rangers come into the weekend ranked 7
th in the latest IWLCA/ILWomen Division II Poll. They defeated No. 13 Tampa back in early March, most recently claiming a 13-10 win over No. 4 Lindenwood.
Favored in the RMAC Preseason Poll, they return the 'Peoples' choice award for Attacker of the Year last season – Kyleigh Peoples. The graduate student has 20 goals thus far, accompanied by eight assist for 28 points. Scoring in all seven outings thus far, she had a season best seven against UCCS early on.
With the departure of Elle Crawford in goal, they have relied on young goalies Elizabeth Myotte and Brigit Goetsch to take over the responsibilities. With a 5-0 record, Goetsch has got the go ahead in three games, recording 28 saves for a .444 save percentage.
Long time foes, the Mavericks will seek their first win over the Rangers in program history and avenge their loss to the Rangers in last season's tournament championship.
Scouting the Mountain Lions
With an identical record to the Mavs, the Mountain Lions are hitting their stride winning the last four. Most recently they rolled past the Thunderwolves of CSU Pueblo, where goalie Madison McGriff tallied nine saves on her way to becoming the all-time program leader in wins. The go-to in goal, she has 46 saves to date with a 9.40-goals against average.
On the opposite end of the field, senior Natalie Church has 30 points between her team leading 14 goals and 16 assists. Additionally, she contributes to the team's draw controls with 25. Defensively she is behind nine caused turnovers and 18 ground balls.
