Irvine, Calif. – Saturday presented two rare opportunities for the Colorado Mesa beach volleyball team, playing against fellow Division II opponents in Concordia Irvine and Cal State LA.
The
Mavericks (10-7) would split on the day, finishing the road trip with a 2-2 record.
Up first were the Eagles of CUI, a team the Mavs could see later in the season at the AVCA Small College Beach Championships in April.
The "J" Team of
Jessa Megenhardt and
Jada Hall battled it out on the No. 3 court, taking the first set before the Eagles surged back to force a deciding set. The decision was a no-brainer, as Megenhardt and Hall dominated for a 15-4 victory and a team point. They finished 2-0 on the day.
With close sets on the other four courts counting towards the team score, unable to secure the dual, the final 4-1 score in favor of CUI.
It was a different outcome in the second match of the day against the Golden Eagles of Cal State LA. Using a 4-1 score, the Mavs picked up their 10
th win of the season.
Taking wins at flights 2-5, all of which came in straight sets. The Golden Eagles took the top-flight in a tough battle, their only point of the dual.
In the exhibition sets, the Mavs fared well.
Hailey Peters and
Savannah Ott went 2-0 on the day, Ashton Reece and
Sydney Leffler going 1-1.
Rianne Brown and
Paige Gwaltney also picked up a win in their complete match, splitting another game with no winner determined due to time.
Colorado Mesa will have a quick turnaround, heading up to Boise, Idaho for the Boise State Beach Classic. There they will take on Washington and Oregon, Friday (April 1), then host Boise State on Saturday to complete the 2-day tournament.
