Bombs Away: Seven Mavs homer in emphatic Sunday doubleheader sweep

Fugate hits grand-slam as Mauser, Smith shine in pitching starts

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.— Seven different Colorado Mesa University Mavericks hit home runs while pitchers Shea Mauser and Ellie Smith allowed just six combined hits and a single run in a Sunday Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference sweep over visiting Fort Lewis College.

Ava Fugate was the first of the seven to go long, hitting a first-inning grand-slam as the Mavericks scored seven runs in the inning, setting the early tone in a 17-0 Game 1 victory.  The Mavs then scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth of Game 2, winning that game 9-1 and completing a 4-game weekend sweep of the Skyhawks.

The Mavericks out-scored the Skyhawks 26-1 during Sunday's doubleheader and 45-4 in the series as they extended their winning streak to 15 games while remaining perfect in RMAC play.  The Mavs are now 16-4 overall and 10-0 in the conference while FLC tell to 3-18 overall and to 3-9 in conference contests.

The Mavs have now won 25 consecutive games against the Skyhawks since 2015, posting mercy-rule wins in ten of the last 12 against them.

Game 1

The Mavericks put up seven runs in the bottom of the first and six more in the fourth, batting around in both.

They scored a season-high 17 runs to put up their most dominant victory of the season to date.

Fugate, Ally Distler, Kaley Barker and Rylee Crouch all hit home runs as Mauser tossed a 2-hit shutout, the first of her season.

Barker and Crouch's home runs came in back-to-back pinch-hit opportunities as Head Coach Mercedes Bohte (Lovato) gave seven reserves opportunities to hit the bottom of the fourth.

Crouch's blast to the party deck in center field was the first home run of her career while Barker hit her first of the season and the second of her career.  Kaytlyn Cripps also recorded her first career hit in the inning.

The Mavs finished the game with a season-high 15 hits, including eight for extra bases.  Fugate and Distler also had doubles as did Brandi HallerLauren Wedman also recorded a triple.

Eleven different Mavericks recorded at least one hit.

Fugate finished with a career-high six RBIs while Distler was 3-for-4 with two three runs scored and two RBIs.

Fugate's grand slam was the first of her career and was the Mavs' second in as many games after Smith had hit one on Saturday as part of a 7-RBI day.  It came one play after Smith had hit a RBI single up the middle to score Ashley Bradford.

Distler then followed Fugate's shot with a double and scored to make it 6-0 when Nicole Christensen singled.  The rally continued when Bradford had an RBI groundout in her second at bat of the opening inning.

Distler then hit a 2-run homer in the second as the Mavs jumped out to a 9-0 lead.

A Wedman RBI triple and RBI groundout by Smith then made the score 11-0 after three innings.

In the fourth, Barker hit a 3-run homer to place Cripps and Distler before Crouch's homer put the Mavs up 15-0.  Fugate then later added a 2-run double to complete the scoring.

Meanwhile, Mauser needed just 69 pitches to toss the shutout.  She faced just 19 batters and struck out three while improving to 5-1 while lowering her ERA to 1.73.

Game 2

Wedman hit her first home run of the season to begin the scoring in the bottom of the first before the Skyhawks held CMU without a run in the second for the first time in 15 innings.

The Skyhawks then tied the game at 1 with a Hannah Rutherford homer in the top of the third before back-to-back doubles to begin the bottom of the second by Illiana Mendoza and Bradford put the Mavericks up 2-1.  Wedman then drove home Bradford with a RBI single as the Mavericks took a 3-1 lead.

The Mavs then tacked on another run in the fourth to go ahead 4-1 when Mendoza singled to score Cripps, who had hit a double in what was her first start as a Maverick behind the plate.

Smith then hit her team-leading fifth homer of the season in the bottom of the fifth to extend the lead to 5-1.  She was also wheeling in the circle, giving up just four hits and a walk while striking out five Skyhawks to improve to 7-2 on the season.

The Mavs then completed the series sweep with a 4-spot in the bottom of the sixth, highlighted by a 2-run Brandi Haller home run, a run-scoring Bradford triple and Wedman sacrifice fly that ended the game.

Bradford, Wedman and Mendoza, who all hail from Tucson, Arizona, each had 2-hit games and combined for six of the Mavs' RBIs and four of their runs.  Wedman led the group going 2-for-3 with three RBIs.  She also stole a base.

The Mavs finished with ten hits in total in the series-finale and reached double-figures in all four games of the set.

The Mavericks are now a perfect 8-0 at home this season and will remain at home for a rare mid-week non-conference doubleheader on Wednesday when they will take on Northern State University of Aberdeen, South Dakota, beginning at 5 p.m.
