ALAMOSA, Colo. – It was a battle between the two highest ranked men's wrestling programs in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference in No. 14 Adams State and No. 16 Colorado Mesa. The Mavericks won six of the ten bouts on their way to a 23-12 win over the Grizzlies in a showdown of Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference heavyweights.
The dual started off with a showdown of two highly ranked 125-pounders in Colorado Mesa's No. 5
Dawson Collins and Adams State's No. 9 Isaiah DeLaCerda. The Grand Junction local edged out DeLaCerda 5-2 after a takedown in the waning seconds of the match. It was Collins' second takedown of the bout with an added escape while DeLaCerda, last season's regional champion at 125 pounds, had just two escapes.
The Grizzlies answered right back in another bout of nationally ranked competitors. No. 10 Jonathan Andreatta scored a 7-5 decision victory over No. 7
Collin Metzgar at 133 pounds.
After an
Erik Contreras win at 141 pounds for the Mavericks, the Grizzlies went on a three-match winning streak at 149, 157 and 165 pounds. All highly contested.
Ryan Wheeler nearly dealt Grand Junction native No. 6 Josiah Rider his second loss of the season at 157-pounds. Rider had to ride out Wheeler in the final period to secure the 3-2 win. Rider's only other loss this season came at the hands of Wheeler at the Midwest Classic in December.
Grand Junction product
Seth Latham picked up a decision victory at 174 pounds followed by a
Nolan Krone technical fall win at 184 pounds putting the Mavericks ahead 14-12 heading to the last two weights of the night.
No. 7
Donnie Negus earned a convincing 8-2 decision over Grand Junction High School product Hunter Tobiasson at 197 pounds giving the Mavericks a 17-12 edge heading to the final bout.
Kash Anderson secured the win for Colorado Mesa as he pinned Aiden Butler in the second round giving the Mavericks the big 23-12 edge.
Colorado Mesa is now 10-2 on the season and 5-0 in conference duals while Adams State falls to 4-4 on the year and 2-3 in RMAC duals.
The Mavericks will be back in action in Grand Junction on Thursday as they host Chadron State in a makeup for the postponement just a few weeks ago. Thursday will also be senior night as the team honors its seniors in the program.
