POCATELLO, Idaho— The Colorado Mesa University women's tennis team remained at .500 on the season as they split a pair of inter-divisional and inter-associational matches here in Idaho State University's Reed Gym on Saturday.
The NCAA Division II Mavericks (4-4) fell to the host and NCAA Division I Bengals, now 3-1 on the season, by a 7-0 score in the morning but turned the tables in a 7-0 blasting of NAIA College of Idaho in their afternoon neutral-site affair.
The Mavericks won all nine official matches against the Yotes (1-4) and also won three exhibition sets against them.
Paige Furin,
Makenna Livingston,
Macy Richards and
Maike Waldburger all went 2-0 officially against them while all nine Mavericks to see action, including in the exhibitions, were victors.
In doubles, Waldburger and Furin posted a 6-0 win over Lauren Kreutzer and Taylor Johnson at No. 1 after
Julianna Campos and
Lauren Thomas registered a nearly as dominant 6-1 win in the third flight. Livingston and Richards then claimed a 6-4 win over Leiana Almaraz and Anna Willcuts at No. 2 to complete the doubles sweep.
In singles, Richards swept all 12 games in a 6-0, 6-0 No. 4 win over Morgan Leavitt while Livingston was a 6-0, 6-1 winner over Johnson in the top flight.
Halle Romero, in the Maverick lineup for the first time this spring on Saturday, then clinched the dual with a 6-0, 6-4 No. 3 singles win over Almaraz before Waldburger gave the Mavs a 5-0 lead with a 6-3, 7-5 win over Kreutzer at No. 2.
Audrey O'Rear, who defeated Willcuts, 6-3, 6-2 and Furin, who smoked Townsend, 6-0, 6-2 then completed the Maverick sweep with No. 5 and 6 singles wins, respectively.
O'Rear and
Kenna Kelley also won a 6-0 exhibition doubles match while Campos and Kelley both won single-set singles exhibitions by a 6-0 margins.
Against ISU, Waldburger and Furin fared the best in doubles before succumbing 6-4 to the Bengals' top duo of Hana Cho and Leah Kuruvilla.
Richards then won seven games in a 6-4, 6-3 loss to Kuruvilla at No. 4 singles in the closest singles affair. Waldburger and Campos also won five games.
The Mavericks will wrap up a busy weekend on Sunday afternoon facing another NCAA Division I opponent in Weber State in Ogden, Utah. The Wildcats defeated Nevada, 5-2 on Saturday to improve to 3-4.
