JACKSONVILLE, Fla.— The Colorado Mesa University men's lacrosse team headed to Florida to take on Rollins College and saw their first loss of the season by a score of 16-9 on Saturday.
Despite picking up the loss, the Mavericks were able to get on the board first as redshirt sophomore
James Steinke was able to find the goal on a pass from redshirt senior
Carson Schwark.
Rollins responded quickly with two goals by Grant Hansen and Marshall Ellison. Hansen proved to be an asset for his team as he was able to end the game with four assists. Two of Hansen's assists were to Justin White, who had two goals within four minutes of each other in the first quarter.
Having five goals to the Mavericks two in the first quarter is what gave the Tars the momentum they needed throughout the game.
Schwark found the goal twice in the game and led the Mavericks in goals. Schwark and
Hunter Holcomb led the team in points as they each had three.
The Mavericks were able to have eight different players score a goal including Schwark, Holcomb, Steinke, redshirt senior
Jake Keyes, redshirt sophomores
AJ Switzer and
Jed Brummett and sophomore
Trey Corkin III.
Freshman
Reece Sullivan got the start for the Mavericks at the goal and had nine saves in net, four of which came in the fourth quarter.
The Mavericks continue their road trip as they will face Coker University in Hartsville, South Carolina on Monday (Feb.14) at 2 p.m. EST (Noon Mountain).
