Maverick blaze past Firestorm

CMU women go 2-1 on opening weekend of spring to move to 3-3 overall

PHOENIX— The Colorado Mesa University Maverick women's tennis dominated Arizona Christian University, claiming a 7-0 road win over the Firestorm on Saturday morning here at the Grand Canyon University Tennis Facility.
 
The victory was the second in a row for the Mavericks, who evened their 2021-22 season record to 3-3, while going 2-1 on their opening weekend of the spring.
 
ACU fell to 1-2.
 
The Mavericks swept the doubles matches dropping just three total games and then won all six singles matches, including five in straight sets.
 
Makenna Livingston, Paige Furin, Macy Richards and Maike Waldburger all went 2-0 as all eight Mavericks to see action were victorious.
 
In doubles, Furin and Waldburger, won 6-1 at No. 1 while Livingston and Richards posted a 6-2 win at No. 2.    Meanwhile, Julianna Campos and Lauren Thomas blanked their opponents, 6-0.
 
In singles play, Livingston claimed a 7-5, 6-4 win over Deondra Bacchus, ranked 43rd in the NAIA, according to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association in the top flight. 
 
Meanwhile, Waldburger was a 6-2, 1-6, 6-2 victor over 35th-ranked Vittoria Quadri at No. 2 singles.
 
Richards, Audrey O'Rear, Kenna Kelley and Furin were also victorious in the third through sixth flights.  Kelley dropped just two games in her No. 5 match against Emma Troyer while Furin shutout her opponent Samantha Salim at No. 6.
 
The Mavericks continue their season next Saturday playing another NAIA foe in the College of Idaho after facing NCAA Division I Idaho State that morning.  Both of those matches will be played in Idaho State's Reed Gym in Pocatello.
