Roadrunners Use Late Run To Beat Mavs

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Metro State used a 13-3 run over the game's final four minutes to steal an 84-78 win at Brownson Arena, handing Colorado Mesa its second straight loss to begin RMAC play.

Metro State's Brayden Maldonado had 14 points, seven assists and four rebounds to lead the Roadrunners. He went a perfect 4-for-4 from behind the arc, including a massive three to beat the shot clock buzzer and give Metro State a 79-77 lead with 1:56 remaining.

The Roadrunners came away with the win despite not dominating in any particular category. They shot 54 percent from the field compared to the Mavs' 53 percent and had slight advantages in rebounding (30-22) and points in the paint (34-26).

Colorado Mesa had a much better shooting night than Friday's game against Colorado School of Mines. The Mavs set season highs with their 53 percent field-goal percentage and 57 percent shooting from behind the arc with 12 three-pointers made.

Blaise Threatt led all scorers with 24 points and added seven assists, seven rebounds and four steals. Owen Koonce made 4 of 5 three-point attempts and finished with 14 points. Reece Johnson (12 pts, 2-2 from three) and Trevor Baskin (10 pts, 6-7 from the line) were the other Mavericks in double figures.

The Mavs led by as many as 12 in the first half and held a nine-point lead with 12 minutes to play, but MSU Denver chipped its way back into the game by forcing timely turnovers and generating easy looks from inside. The Mavericks had more turnovers (17) than assists (16), while the Roadrunners had 23 assists against just 14 turnovers.

With the loss, the Mavericks are 5-3 with an 0-2 mark in RMAC play. They will seek to right the ship on the road next weekend, facing UCCS (7-2, 1-1 RMAC) at 7 p.m. on Friday and Regis (3-5, 0-2 RMAC) at 5 p.m. on Sunday.
