Riniker's Career Night Helps Mavs Over UCCS

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Not even a jersey switch could interrupt Mac Riniker's rhythm.

Wearing No. 33 for the second half after bloodying his usual No. 4 jersey in the first half, Riniker was faultless over all 40 minutes, shooting a perfect 8-for-8 from the field, 3-for-3 from three-point range and 2-for-2 from the line for a career-high 21 points in an 86-70 win over UCCS.

Blaise Threatt had 24 points to go along with six rebounds, six assists and three steals for the Mavericks, who improve to 6-3 overall and 1-2 in the RMAC with the victory over the Mountain Lions. Threatt hit five three-pointers during the game for CMU while Isaac Jessup also knocked down a pair of threes to finish in double figures with 10 points.

The Mavericks shot a season-high 55.4 percent from the field as a team and made a season-high 14 three-pointers. Although the Mavs were potent offensively in both halves, they were clinical in the second half, shooting 65 percent from the field (15-23) and 73 percent from beyond the arc (8-11).

Colorado Mesa also forced a season-high 15 steals as UCCS committed 21 turnovers. The Mountain Lions shot 43 percent from the field and their three-point shooting went the opposite direction as CMU's in the second half, as UCCS converted just 6 of 19 from behind the arc after halftime.

UCCS initially jumped out to a 7-3 advantage, and the teams had traded the lead six times when Mac Stodart converted a layup to put UCCS ahead 25-24 with 7:05 left in the first half. But the Mavericks ripped off a 17-0 run over the next five minutes of game time to go up 41-25, eventually heading to the locker room with a 43-30 halftime lead.

Riniker shined during the run, converting a pair of free throws to put CMU back up 26-25. Then, after Isaac Jessup hit a pair of free throws and a three-pointer and Michael McCurry also hit a three, Riniker scored the final seven points of the Mavs' 17-0 tidal wave by himself, draining a three-pointer, a layup and a jumper in the span of a minute and a half. Riniker scored 18 of his 21 points in the first half.

An 8-0 run from CMU at around the three-quarter mark of the game gave the Mavericks their largest lead of the night at 70-43. Coach Mike DeGeorge emptied the bench soon after, and Ty Allred made the most of his three minutes of game time by capping the night off with a thunderous dunk with 40 seconds to play.

Colorado Mesa will head to Denver to face Regis at 5 p.m. Saturday. The Rangers are 4-5 overall and got their first RMAC win on Friday by topping Westminster, 63-61.
