GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Despite
Trevor Baskin leading all scorers with a 21-point performance, Colorado Mesa men's basketball had a rough beginning to the RMAC season, falling 74-62 to the No. 10 Colorado School of Mines Orediggers.
The Orediggers shot 57 percent from the field while the Mavericks were held to just 28 percent (17-56), a season low. Mines led by 15 at halftime and by as many as 26 in the second half before the Mavericks closed the game on a 15-1 run to make the final score closer.
The first quarter of the game was competitive, with the teams tied 10-10 after the first 10 minutes as CMU evened the score on an
Isaac Jessup three-pointer. Mines began to open it up with about eight minutes left in the first half, as an 8-0 run over a two-minute span gave them a 26-15 lead.
Baskin did his best to keep CMU in the game, shooting 4 of 6 from the field and 7 of 9 from the line for 15 points while grabbing five rebounds in the first half. Baskin ended the game 9-for-12 from the charity stripe. The Mavericks had 31 free-throw attempts as a team, converting 23.
Owen Koonce also shined in the loss, scoring a season-high 14 points, all of which came in the second half. Koonce made 3 of 5 from beyond the arc and converted 5 of 6 from the line after halftime. Koonce contributed nine points during CMU's game-ending 15-1 run and also collected a game-high eight rebounds.
