Seven Mavericks Claim Titles during the Maverick Open

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The No. 3 Colorado Mesa women's wrestling team crowned seven champions at the Maverick Open on Saturday (Nov. 5) afternoon in Brownson Arena. Four of the seven weight class winners were freshman from the Maverick squad.
 
The tournament featured 116 wrestlers from seven different schools along with a handful of individuals in this year's edition of the open tournament.
 
Freshman Isabella Morales picked the tournament championship at 109 pounds with a pin at 2:41 over Haevynne Robles-Wright of Chadron State in the title bout. The Toppenish, Wash. native picked up a 10-0 technical fall win over Brianna Vollendorf of Chadron State in her first match before a pin at 1:07 of Alyssa Poe-Hatten of Providence in the semifinals. Morales is now 5-0 on the season after winning both matches on Friday evening.
 
Fellow freshman Israel Resendez earned a forfeit victory in the final at 116 pounds and finished the day with a 3-0 mark. The Denver native opened with a 41 second fall in her first bout f the day followed by a 40 second pin in her quarterfinal. She picked up a 12-0 win over Isabell Ortiz in the semifinals.
 
Redshirt junior Marissa Gallegos earned the championship medal at 123 pounds with an 11-0 technical fall win over Anna DiCugno in the title bout. Gallegos' first two win on the day came by technical fall over Jasmin Soc-Lopez of Ottawa and Daisy Castaneda of Santa Ana. The Denver native earned a first-round pin of Alicia Frank of Providence in the semifinals to earn the shot at the title.
 
Freshman Hailey Chapman defeated her teammate Lizzie Miller to claim the championship at 130 pounds. The Lake Arrowhead, Calif. native earned a pin of Gabbie Parini of Providence in her first match of the day followed by a win over teammate Melainia Beachner by technical fall in the semifinals.
 
Colorado Mesa went 1-2-3 in the weight as freshman Hania Halverson finished third.
 
Freshman Celina Cooke came away with the tournament crown at 143 pounds as she claimed a 14-5 win over teammate Jada Llamido in the title bout. Cooke defeated Annie Peart by technical fall in her first bout before a 3-3 criteria win over teammate Erica Schroeder in the semifinals on her way to the title match.
 
Dalia Garibay and Aynslee Hester double forfeited to each other in the final at 155 pounds as the teammates were scheduled to square off with each other. Garibay scored a pair of technical fall wins and a fall on her way to the final while Hester had two technical fall wins and a decision victory in the semifinals for her path to the final.
 
Melena Jones had another stellar day in this year's Maverick Open as she claimed the title at 170 pounds. Jones opened with a 10-0 technical fall win in her opener followed by another 10-0 win over Savanna Barroso of Ottawa. She backed up her win over Chadron's Kamila Montenegro with a 5-0 win in the semifinals before a 10-4 win over Chadron State's Lila Bloomer in the title bout.
 
In total the Mavericks had 17 wrestlers finish in the top six at their respective weights.
 
Colorado Mesa will make the long trek to the Missouri Valley Open on November 18-19 for their next competition.
