#3 Mavericks Pick Up Two Wins on Season Opening Night

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo – The No. 3 Colorado Mesa women's wrestling team ran their dual match win streak to seven as they defeated both Chadron State and Texas Woman's to open the 2022-23 season on Friday (Nov. 4) evening in Brownson Arena.

The Mavericks won all ten contested bouts in the season opening with over Chadron State, 41-3. The Eagles lone points in the dual came on scoring points in the bouts at 109, 116 and 170 pounds.
 
Colorado Mesa picked up four wins via the pin as top-ranked 123-pounder Marissa Gallegos earned her first win of the season via the pin. Freshman Hailey Chapman earned her first collegiate win by way of pin at 136 pounds and was followed by fellow freshman Jada Llamido picking up her first collegiate win by way of pin at 143 pounds.
 
In one of the themes of the night, Dalia Garibay returned to the mat by picking up a pin at 155 pounds.
 
Jennesis Martinez (101), Lizzie Miller (130), and Jayleen Sekona all won by technical fall.
 
Freshman Isabella Morales and Israel Resendez each won by decision at 109 and 116 pounds while Melena Jones pulled off possibly the win of the night with a decision victory over Eagle Kamila Montenegro at 170 pounds.

#3 Colorado Mesa 34, Texas Woman's 14
 
Colorado Mesa won six of the nine contested bouts and picked up another by forfeit in a 34-14 win over first-year program Texas Woman's University to close out the season opening night. The Pioneers were making their women's wrestling debut on the night.
 
Isabella Morales (109), Lizzie Miller (130), Hailey Chapman (136), and Jada Llamido (143) all recorded wins by pin. For Chapman and Llamido, they both finished the night 2-0 with both of their wins coming by way pf pin.
 
Gallegos (123) and Garibay (155) each earned wins by way of technical fall.
 
Kaylie Catalano earned the forfeit victory at 101 pounds.
 
Pioneer Aubrey Yauger scored the biggest win of the night by defeating No. 1 ranked Jayleen Sekona at 190 pounds.
