LEXINGTON, Ky.— Colorado Mesa University volleyball standouts
Sierra Hunt,
Savannah Spitzer and
Sabrina VanDeList were all named as honorable mention all-Americans by the American Volleyball Coaches Association, which announced the Division II All-America teams on Wednesday.
Each had also been honored on the AVCA's Honorable Mention All-South Central Region team announced last week. They were all also named to the All-Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference teams and were big parts of the big parts of the Mavericks' 2022 season success.
CMU finished the campaign with a 22-7 overall record and while advancing to the semifinal round of the regional tournament for the second consecutive year.
Hunt, a redshirt sophomore outside hitter from Aurora, Colorado, was a First Team All-RMAC selection and finished fourth in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference for both kills (3.47) and points (3.84) per set. She was also second on the team behind fellow outside hitter
Sydney Leffler with 309 total kills after missing the final two matches due to injury. Hunt also had a .266 attack percentage and was in double-figures for kills in 17 matches this season.
Spitzer, a redshirt junior middle blocker who also hails from Aurora, finished the season with a RMAC-leading .389 attack percentage, currently the 13
th best mark in the country. She was also a first team all-region pick by the Division II Conference Commissioners Association (D2CCA) and to the Second Team All-RMAC squad.
Spitzer put down 238 kills (2.38/set) and 53 blocks throughout the campaign. Her attack percentage was the third best in CMU history. Spitzer had earned Second Team All-RMAC honors.
VanDeList, who earned First Team All-RMAC plaudits for the third straight season, led the RMAC with 53 service aces, the second most in CMU history during the rally-scoring era (2001-Present) and tallied 1,156 assists (11.22/set) to rank second in the conference and sixth nationally for assist per set. She also had nine double-doubles.
The Mavs have now had at least one AVCA honoree in each of the last five normal seasons dating back to 2017. Awards were not given in 2020, due to COVID. This year marks the first time since 2014 that the Mavs have had three selections in the same season.
