FLAGSTAFF, Ariz.— Kyra Apodaca and
Isaiah Cheeks both set NCAA Division II pre-championship qualifying scores in Saturday action here at Northern Arizona University's Lumberjack Diving Invitational.
Meanwhile, all nine Colorado Mesa University Maverick divers in action during the day set new season-bests.
Apodaca scored 393.45 points on 11 dives of the 1-meter board, surpassing the necessary qualifying standard of 390 points. She will now need a 6-dive format score from another meet to earn a repeat trip to the national championship site after earning a pair of CSCAA Second Team all-America and Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Freshman of the Year honors last season.
She and three freshman teammates in
Kenya Meyer,
Aubrey Preisler and
Mimi Licht all dove 11 times while the rest of the 27 women from five Division I schools stopped after six dives in the preliminary round with 16 of those moving on to 6-dive consolation and championship finals.
Meyer scored 353.20 points while Preisler was third in the CMU group with 331.15 points. Licht scored 294.50 points.
With his national pre-championship qualification out of the way, Cheeks led a group of five men on the 3-meter board with his score of 510.55 points, easily surpassing the qualification standard of 460 points.
Meanwhile, freshman
Dawson Wilson took second with 444.65 points while sophomore
Josh Thomas was third with 394.80. Freshman
Devon Gordon (379.70) and
Aiden Coon (343.60) also surpassed their season-bests.
