GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The No. 16 Colorado Mesa men's wrestling team won six of the ten bouts and escaped with a 19-12 win over the No. 21 Colorado School of Mines Orediggers in a battle of Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference unbeatens on Sunday (Jan. 30) afternoon in Brownson Arena.
The Mavericks (8-2, 3-0 RMAC) opened the dual with a pair of narrow wins at 125 and 133 pounds. No. 5
Dawson Collins worked a 3-2 win over Christian Lopez while No. 7
Collin Metzgar earned a 3-0 win over Tyler Krause.
Mines got on the board with a 5-4 decision victory for Wes Rayburn at 141 pounds that cut the Maverick lead to 6-3 at the time.
At 149 pounds,
Nick Gallegos secured the lone bonus point victory of the afternoon with a 13-5 win over Cody Thompson.
The two teams split the final six bouts with all going for decision victories.
Ryan Wheeler moved to 2-0 against Oredigger Carter Noehre as he won the bout in convincing 5-0 fashion. Wheeler defeated Noehre at the Midwest Classic earlier this season via a pin and moves his season record to 12-5.
At 174 pounds,
Seth Latham had somewhat of a personal victory as he defeated Ryan Fidel 4-2. It is the first win for Latham over the Oredigger as he fell in both matchups a year ago.
Colorado Mesa sealed the victory at 197 pounds when
Donnie Negus worked for a 5-2 decision victory over Perry Rodenbeck.
The Mavericks will head out on the road next week when they take on the nationally ranked Adams State Grizzlies and New Mexico Highlands Cowboys on Thursday and Friday evening.
