COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.— Colorado Mesa University Swimming & Diving standouts
Lily Borgenheimer,
Noah Luna and
Jacob Troescher were all recognized by the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference as the league's athletes of the week on Thursday afternoon after both Maverick teams learned that they remained in the top five of the national rankings, released earlier in the day.
Borgenheimer was named as the RMAC Women's Swimmer of the Week for the third time this season and fifth in her Maverick career. Luna was named as the RMAC Men's Diver of the Week while Troescher was selected as the conference's swimmer of the week. Those are the first such honors of their respective careers.
In the CSCAA Division II Top 25 Coaches' Poll that was announced in the morning, the Maverick men remained in the No. 4 spot, their loftiest perch in program history. The Maverick women slipped one spot to fifth after being ranked a school-record fourth in the previous polls, which had been released on Dec. 9.
The RMAC individual honors came after the Mavericks shined in their 2022 debuts last Friday (Jan. 7) in tri-meets at Air Force. The Maverick teams dominated RMAC rival Colorado School of Mines as the women extended their 6-year long RMAC dual-meet winning streak to 32 with a 188-51 win. The CMU women also tied Division I Air Force, 121-121, winning each of the final five events of the meet.
Meanwhile, the CMU men extended their RMAC dual-meet winning streak, which dates back six seasons, with a 149-87 win over Mines despite missing several of their top swimmers.
Individually, Borgenheimer won both of her individual events and set another NCAA provisional qualifying time. In the 400-yard individual medley, Borgenheimer dominated the field winning the event by a massive 14.2 seconds with a NCAA "B" cut and personal-best time of 4:35.63 (4:28.63-altitude adjusted). She then won the 100 breaststroke by 1.15 seconds in 1:04.79 (1:04.65-altitude adjusted).
The Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin native leads all of Division II in the 200 breast with an NCAA "A" cut time and paces the RMAC in six different disciplines this season while qualifying for the NCAA meet in five.
Luna, who was cmpeting for the first time this season and for the first time in 22 months, set a NCAA qualifying and career-high score of 310.13 points on six dives off the 3-meter board during Friday's meet. He was the top Maverick and Division II finisher in that event, just minutes after suffering an injury during the earlier 1-meter competition. His 3-meter score is the best 6-dive score that the Mavericks have had this season and ranks him eighth nationally, according to Swimcloud.
Meanwhile, Troescher claimed his first collegiate victory in dominating fashion as he won the 1,000-yard freestyle by more than 18 ½ seconds. The true freshman won the 1,000 free in 10:02.85 (9:44.35-altitude adjusted) and then came back to finish second overall as the top Division II finisher in the 500 free with a time of 4:53.81 (4:46.81-altitude adjusted).
In the CSCAA poll, the Maverick men received 131 points to trail only Indianapolis (148), Queens (144) and Drury (140), who remained in the top three. McKendree also remained steady in the No. 5 spot with 124 points.
Elsewhere in the RMAC, Oklahoma Christian fell five spots to 17th while Mines dropped the same five spots to No. 21.
In the women's poll, the Mavericks received 119 points but were passed by Nova Southeastern, which moved up three spots from seventh to the No. 4 position. Queens now leads the poll outright with 150 points while former co-No. 1 Indianapolis is the second with 144. Drury continues to sit third with 138.
Mines dropped out of the top 25 but is still the top receiving in the others receiving votes with 10 points.
The next CSCAA poll is scheduled to be released on Feb. 9.
The Mavericks are off this weekend before they are slated to compete in tri-meets at BYU on Jan. 21 and Utah at Jan. 22. The University of Denver will join the Mavericks and the hosts of those meets.
