GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.— Colorado Mesa University outside hitters
Holly Schmidt and
Sydney Leffler combined for 21 kills as each was in double figures while hitting .300 or higher to lead the Mavericks to a dominating 3-set Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference volleyball sweep over visiting Adams State University, which had come into the match as the outright leaders of the RMAC standings at 3-0.
CMU improved to 7-3 overall and to 2-1 in the RMAC with the 25-14, 25-15, 25-15 win, their sixth straight over the Grizzlies (7-6, 3-1 RMAC) dating back to 2016.
Schmidt finished the night with 11 kills and hit .348. She also had seven digs as the Mavericks held the Grizzlies to negative .056 hitting. Meanwhile, Leffler, a true freshman had 10 kills while hitting .300. She and middle blocker
Tye Wedhorn, who added six kills while hitting .556, also finished with four blocks each.
Maverick setter
Sabrina VanDeList finished the night with 31 assists, eight digs and a match-high three service aces. Defensive specialist
Libby Borgerding, in the starting lineup for just the third time in her brief time as a Mav, and junior libero
Kerstin Layman also had eight digs each.
The Mavericks finished with 39 kills as a team, nearly double ASU's count of 20. The Grizzlies were also guilty of 25 hitting errors, including 18 unforced, allowing the Mavericks to roll to comfortable margins of victory in each of the three sets.
ASU had a negative hitting percentage in each set.
CMU also took advantage of big runs in each frame. After trailing by the slightest of margins (10-9) early in the first, the Mavericks went on a 12-1 run that featured a pair of VanDeList aces, two kills by Leffler and another by Wedhorn as well as three straight Grizzly hitting errors by Alexandra MacAskill.
In the process, the Mavericks built a 22-11 lead and went on to win the set on a kill by
Ashton Reese on the right side.
The Mavericks, who hit .296 as a team in the opening frame, continued to roll in the second getting out to an 11-3 lead before going on another 6-1 run late in the set. The Mavericks hit .333 as a squad in the second frame as six different Mavericks combined for 14 kills while taking advantage of ASU's continued hitting woes.
The third set was a tight battle in the early going featuring six ties and six lead changes until the Mavericks seized control with a 5-0 run to take a 14-10 lead.
After splitting the next four points, the Mavericks then used another 6-0 run with Borgerding beyond the service line en-route to a 22-12 lead and the eventual win, finished off on kills by
Savannah Spitzer and
Sierra Hunt.
The Mavericks will remain at home for a Saturday evening match against New Mexico Highlands, which dropped a 5-set match at Westminster College in Salt Lake City on Friday night. That loss dropped the Cowgirls to 4-8 overall and to 1-2 in RMAC play.
