GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.— Colorado Mesa University redshirt junior
Ashton Reese put down a career-high 14 kills while hitting .571 as the Maverick volleyball team made quick work of visiting New Mexico Highlands University in a 25-18, 25-11, 25-11 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference sweep on Saturday evening in Brownson Arena. The win was CMU's third consecutive 3-0 victory and allowed the Mavs, who hit .337 as a team on the night, to improve to 8-3 overall and to 3-1 in the loop.
The Cowgirls, held to a .032 attack percentage, fell to 4-9 overall and to 1-3 in conference play.
The Mavs had a nearly double, 44-23 advantage in total kills and needed just one hour and four minutes to dispatch the Cowgirls.
Tye Wedhorn also had eight of those kills and hit .353. She and Reese also added four blocks a piece.
Maverick libero
Kerstin Layman led all players with 14 digs while
Libby Borgerding also helped anchor the back row, digging up a career-high 10 Cowgirl attacks.
Maverick setter
Sabrina VanDeList tallied 35 assists as well as six digs and had both of the Mavs' service aces.
Meanwhile,
Holly Schmidt finished with seven kills while fellow outside hitter
Sydney Leffler added six.
Lisi Langi was NMHU's top swinger with six kills.
The first set was tied on seven occasions in the early going before Reese took over the set, which saw her put down five kills. The Eaton, Colorado native recorded a kill and then back-to-back blocks, teaming with
Savannah Spitzer on the first, as the Mavericks suddenly pulled in front, 16-13.
A dump kill by VanDeList followed by a kill from Spitzer then increased the Mavericks lead to five (20-15) as they completed the first set victory.
The Mavs then dominated the remaining two frames, hitting .441 in the second and .364 in the third. Wedhorn and Schmidt finished with five kills each in the second while Reese put down seven kills on just eight swings in the final frame.
In the third and final set, The Mavs went on a 9-2 run to build a 14-7 lead and then scored the final eight points of the match as Reese and late Maverick outside hitter substitute
Sierra Hunt dominated the Cowgirls from both sides of the CMU attack.
The Mavericks will now prepare for a 4-match stretch on the road, beginning Friday (Oct. 1) at MSU Denver in what will be a re-match of a Sept. 16 thriller that the Roadrunners won in four tight sets. First serve in Denver and the Auraria Events Center will be at 7 p.m.
