Mavs take three straight 25-17 wins to sweep Mustangs

CMU opens up MSU Hampton Inn-vitational with victory

WICHITA FALLS, Texas— The nation's 22nd-ranked Colorado Mesa University volleyball team was guilty of just eight hitting errors and hit .313 as a team to claim a 3-set road sweep by identical 25-17 scores over Midwestern State University in the opening match of the Mustangs' Hampton Inn-vitational on Friday here at the D.L Ligon Coliseum.

The Mavericks improved to 3-2 overall and upped their in-region record to 3-0 with the victory over their Lone Star Conference foes, who dropped to 0-6.

Freshman outside hitter Syndey Leffler led a balanced offensive attack with 11 kills while hitting .375.

Tye Wedhorn and Savannah Spitzer also turned in impressive efforts in the middle.  Wedhorn put down nine kills and hit .421 while Spitzer had eight kills on an errorless .533 hitting effort.  She was also involved in four of the Mavs' seven blocks as CMU held the Mustangs to a .067 team hitting percentage.

Maverick right side Maranda Theleus also added six kills and three blocks while hitting .333.

Redshirt freshman setter Sabrina VanDeList recorded her second double-double of the young campaign with 29 assists and 16 digs while libero Kerstin Layman recorded 15 digs.

The Mustangs' Kaitlynn Stoker put down nine kills and hit .304 for the Mustangs.

The Mavericks trailed in a set only once throughout the entire match.  That came early in the second set as the Mustangs scored the first point to go up 1-0 before CMU later used a 3-0 run to build a 10-7 lead while never looking back.

The Mavs hit .242 as a team in the first set as Leffler recorded five of her kills.  Meanwhile, the Mustangs were held to a zero hitting percentage in the opening frame as the hosts committed 12 total hitting errors, three of which were the result of Maverick blocks.

The Mavericks continued to improve throughout the match hitting .333 in the second set and .367 in the third.

The Mavs will have the rest of Friday off before resuming their participation tournament on Saturday when they take on Arkansas Tech at 9 a.m. Central (8 a.m. Mountain) before facing Eastern New Mexico at 2 p.m. Central (1 p.m. Mountain).  Those matches will be CMU's final non-conference matches of the regular season.
