LOUISVILLE, Ky.— Colorado Mesa University softball standouts
Ellie Smith and
Lauren Wedman were both named as first team selections to the NFCA Division II All-America Team, the organization announced on Tuesday. The Mavericks were just one of two programs (West Texas A&M) nation-wide to have multiple first team selections and marks the first time since 2000 that the CMU has had two players selected to the first team in the same season.
However, the Mavericks have had at least one NFCA All-American in each of the last five completed seasons and have now had a first team pick in each of the last three completed seasons.
A complete list of CMU's NFCA Division II All-Americans can be found below.
In 2021, Smith, an at-large selection from her utility/pitcher position, and Wedman, an outfielder, led the Mavericks to a 39-5 overall record highlighted by a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference regular season and tournament title sweep and a fifth straight NCAA Division II Tournament appearance.
The Mavs' .886 winning percentage is currently second best in the nation behind only Augustana's .887 mark (47-6) heading into the Vikings' efforts at this week's NCAA Division II National Championships. The Mavs also led the country in total runs scored (394) and scoring average (8.95), largely fueled by Smith and Wedman, who rank first and second in the all of Division II in RBIs.
Smith, who also leads the country with 22 doubles and 147 total bases, drove in 80 runs throughout the season, the second highest total in program-history trailing only Brooke Hodgson's 2018 school record of 105. The Riverside, California native who served as the Mavs' designated player and No. 2 pitcher, also led the RMAC with 19 home runs, tied for the fourth most in the country this year and tied for second most for a single-season in CMU history. The redshirt sophomore also recorded 68 hits, 13
th most in the country, to hit .444 while helping fuel her .961 slugging percentage, which ranks her sixth in the country this season and third in program history.
Smith also posted the RMAC's top ERA of 2.19 and posted a 13-1 record and two saves from within the circle, allowing just one home run in 86 1/3 innings of work.
Smith was named as the RMAC Player of the Year and is a top 15 finalist for the Schutt Sports/NFCA Division II Player and Pitcher of the Year awards.
Meanwhile, Wedman, a redshirt sophomore out of Tucson, Arizona, hit .514 to break Hodgson's 2018 school-record batting average record of .508. She also drove in 67 runs, second most in the country behind only Smith.
Wedman, who started all 44 of the Mavs' games in right field, also scored 65 runs to stand second in the country for runs scored per game (1.48) behind only teammate
Brooke Doumer, who scored 67 runs. Wedman also banged out 75 hits, third most in Division II, and led the RMAC with her .570 on-base percentage, the tenth best mark in the country this season and the second best in CMU history. She is also tied for third in the country with seven triples and ranks ninth nationally in total bases (125), helping fuel her .856 slugging percentage, the tenth best in program history.
