GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.— Colorado Mesa University's
Tony Torres broke a 6-year old school-record and a two-week old track record as he posted a time of 14 minutes, 29.75 seconds to win a thrilling men's 5,000-meter run in the Maverick Multi & Open, the largest ever home meet in CMU history, which got underway here at the Mavs' new on-campus track & field complex.
Torres set a NCAA Division II Championship qualifying time and won the race by 0.11 seconds over Colorado Christian's Josh Pierantoni, who joined his teammates Ryder Searle and Trent Cochran as provisional qualifiers. Even without the altitude adjustment, Torres' time went under the sea-level Maverick record of 14:31.66, set by Daniel Vavrik in Norwalk, California in 2016.
Meanwhile, CMU's
Mica Jenrette led the Maverick women. She has tallied 2,931 points through four events of the women's heptathlon and leads the 9-woman field by 281. She won three of the four events and placed second in another on Friday turning in a winning time of 15.18 seconds in the 100-meter hurdles before clearing 1.65 meters (5 feet, 5 inches) in the high jump and throwing 10.17 meters (33-4.5) in the shot put. She was second in the 200 meters at 26.23 seconds.
The meet continues Saturday, beginning at 9 a.m.
