Women's Lacrosse Return Home to take on Skyhawks

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.  – The Colorado Mesa women's lacrosse team (5-3, 4-0 RMAC) will return to the comforts of Maverick Field, welcoming the Fort Lewis Skyhawks Sunday to continue conference play. With just three games remaining in the regular season, the Mavericks will look to maintain their undefeated conference record.

LAST TIME OUT
On the road at CSU Pueblo, the Mavericks picked up their fourth straight win, taming the Thunderwolves, 17-10. Lauren Wick matched her season high four goals, scoring five points with the addition of an assist. Taylor Jakeman and Regan Wentz combined for another six goals, with four other players contributing to the team's total.

For a majority of the first half, the Mavs held a comfortable lead. As the second half got underway, the Thunderwolves looked to be gaining momentum and cut the deficit to one.

CMU would go on to score five unanswered goals, on what would become a nine-goal half. CSU Pueblo would score five in each of the halves, but was not enough to overtake the Mavericks.

Lula Mitchell and Adelaine Charlsen each recorded time and bagged four saves a piece. Mitchell would be awarded the win, bringing her record to 3-3 on the season.

SCOUTING THE SKYHAWKS
With a 3-5 record, and 2-4 in conference action the Skyhawks are coming off a key 13-12 win over Westminster. The win snapped a four-game skid, and gave them their second conference win.

Eden Freiberg led the scoring efforts with five goals, three of which came in the second half comeback to lift the Skyhawks to victory. Averi Basso grabbed the win in goal, taking home eight saves.

Abby Escandon, is one of six players with double-digit goals, leading the team with 21 goals, and 24 points.

RMAC PRESEASON COACHES POLL
Snagging one first-place vote, Colorado Mesa brought in 29-total points and were predicted to finish second in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference preseason coaches' poll. The other six first-place votes available were awarded to Regis who were favored to win the conference.

Kenzie Blackwell and Ashton Whittle landed on the 'Players to Watch' list.
Blackwell, a senior attack out of Granite Bay, Calif. returns for the Mavericks after a shortened 2020 season. Before the pandemic shut down the season, Blackwell led the team in goals racking up 11 in four games. She also assisted on five others for 16-total points, and scooped up seven ground balls, while causing two turnovers.

Whittle returns for her junior season as another key contributor to the Mavs front line attack. She started all four games during the abbreviated 2020 season, and scored the third most goals on the team with six.

MCHALE AT THE HELM
This seasons Maverick women's lacrosse team is under new leadership, with head coach Shannon McHale taking over the reins back in June of 2020.  McHale came to Colorado Mesa after spending the last three seasons as an assistant coach at perennial powerhouse Florida Southern. During her time with the Mocs, she helped the squad finish as the national runner-up, had six players earn IWLCA all-America honors, and won 18-straight games en route to the national title game.
DURANGO, Colo. – The No. 25 Colorado Mesa women's lacrosse team found themselves down early, but rallied to net 10 unanswered points, leading to an eventual 19-11 victory over Fort Lewis to remain unscathed in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play.
Kiley Davis continues to pilot the Mavs scoring efforts, producing a new season high five goals, to go along with a ground ball and a caused turnover. Lauren Wick followed up with four goals and an assist. Ashton Whittle did a little bit of everything, with two goals, three ground balls, two caused turnovers, and six draw controls.
Adelaine Charlsen picked up her second straight win defending the goal, bagging eight saves and four ground balls on the day.
